i'm planning on getting the 60Gb version of the drive, mainly because it is supposed to be almost silent.. but i read in a review that it generates a lot of heat in the case, and may require an extra fan to cool it. I will not be using a RAID setup, so won't have one drive ontop of the other.. will I need an extra fan to cool it?

thanks

I don't think you should, unless the Seagate instructions tell you to use a separate fan. If it does fail, it should be covered under warranty, because you are giving it normal use.

Cooling the drive won't hurt though, and I'm sure most review sites would test the drive to it's max(thus extra cooling is needed for them).

Yeah, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it. I have 3 Seagate Barricudas all running with no kind of cooling on them. They are up there in the heat scale IMO compared to all the other drives i've used before, but i'm still not worried - I've never had any hard drive cooling and as far as I know never experienced any kind of problems due to heat.

I'm using 2 Seagate drives in my rig and I just have a case fan blowing over it because my case allows 2 front case fans Nothing to worry about though...I'm not worried about the heat.

FWIW-

I have a bunch of different drives haht I swap in and out of my rig in mobile racks.

2 Seagate Barracuda IV's.

2 IBM 60GXP's.

2 Maxtor D740X's.

I use Dtemp to monitor the HDD temps.

The two Seagates are the quietest of all the drives. They run between 30C and 40C depending on the ambient temps.

The two IBMs run 3-4C hotter than the Seagates.

The two Maxtors run 5-7C hotter than the Seagates.

3 Barracuda ATA IV:

- 1 60 Gb 22º after 4 hours of use;
- 2 40 Gb 22º after 4 hours of use;

According to DTemp.
