i think it's a seagate rebate so no need to deal with compusa. past purchases from compusa with rebates have turned out great, no real problems, standard wait time of 6-8 weeks.

I got in on a similiar deal from BB a month or two ago for the Seagate 120 gig. Its a rebate from Seagate and I got it back in about 4 weeks. The drive is great, dead silent and performs really well

its a 7200.7, its a tad louder than the normal seagate V and IV, by .1 dBel to be exact, most might not notice it but i can unless i step a few feet away from the comp then it dont matter

I just ordered a WD160GB/7200/8mb for $100. Is the 120GB seagate a better drive? It's less per gig, but as far as performance goes? I can't find any WD160 reviews anywhere.

Over time - like at the 1 and 2 year marks, Western Digitals get louder - and louder - and louder - and louder. The one behind me sounds like an airplane on the runway. It's still fast and reliable, but I'm not having them any more, even at $0.20/gig. I just found its replacement - thanks.

hmm, this is what confuses me about these rebates. CompUSA did this a coupla weeks ago. I bought one and submitted the rebate. Now they are doing the same thing. If you read the rebate you'll see "One rebate will be issued per SKU per household." So I can't do it again on a completely different rebate for the rest of this product's life?!?

I'm considering buying this, but my brothers and I have never purchased a Seagate before, so we don't have any personal experiences with it. Western Digital has been very nice to us (except this one time...). So Seagate is good? Compared to WD/Maxtor?

Seagate is very good. I got a 160GB Maxtor DM9+ before and I thought it was really really loud. I mean the seeks were just so annoying! I used the Hitachi prog to tone it down, and its seeks were quieter but still there. Sandra results:
Buffered Read : 82 MB/s
Sequential Read : 48 MB/s
Random Read : 7 MB/s
Buffered Write : 62 MB/s
Sequential Write : 44 MB/s
Random Write : 14 MB/s
Average Access Time : 8 ms (estimated)

Now I got a Seagate 7200.7 8MB 80GB, which has inaudible seeks (once my ear is farther than 6" from the drive or when the lid is on), and I find that the idle is quieter than my 5400RPM Maxtor. Results out of the box:
Buffered Read : 83 MB/s
Sequential Read : 54 MB/s
Random Read : 8 MB/s
Buffered Write : 80 MB/s
Sequential Write : 53 MB/s
Random Write : 9 MB/s
Average Access Time : 6 ms (estimated)

So basically, after taming the Maxtor a bit, it was still louder than the Seagate, and its performance was quite a bit worse. Whereas, out of the box, the Seagate is very quiet and its performance is excellent. Five stars for the Barracuda!

This drive is really a good deal! A Seagate at 50c a gig If only my Maxtor started failing out this week instead of last, I'd have a 120GB for $60 instead of a 80GB for $50, lol.

Ah... you youngins. Seagate is a premier disk maker from the days of old. I have 10K SCSI Seagates that have been spinning 24 hours a day for about the last 7 years on my Suns and SGIs. It's sad that they've had to resort to selling cheap drives at CompUSA. It's like Ferrari competing for Ford Focus customers.
