This is the same drive that was ~$120 including ship & tax a few days ago when I ordered a 60GB from newegg for $97, now it's back on dell for $103 shipped free.

There is a 15% off on peripherals n software (no coupon reqd auto decrements)
The shipping is also free at least for now (don't know till when)
Don't know of any other coupons.

No coupons I know of for small business. The only one for Dell home is 10% off which would bring it down to 110 plus 50% off shipping which would be 2.75 or 3.00 for a total of ~113.00 with no tax. Makes the price of the drives fairly equal in my case. Depends if you want your donation to go Dell or to your state goverment.


Don't forget eBates. It's only 2% but a couple of bucks is a couple of bucks.

Well, my problem might be that it was an IBM 120 gxp from Newegg. It bugs me how oem's (Dell) or resellers (Newegg) can get the drives shipped to them in foam and then reship them to you in packing peanuts. Not the best way to ship a drive and it makes it harder to rma, at least the IBM requires a foam protected drive when you ship it to them. I wonder if a lot of their problems aren't related to this type of packaging. Anyone know if the Dell Seagate comes in the Seagate clamshell container? I might bite if it does.

Mine did. But it also took 2 weeks to get here. Spend the extra money and buy from somewhere else.

I have to say, this is the quietest hard drive I have ever used. It truly makes no noise... or whatever noise it makes is drowned out by my case fan (which is just a normal fan).

Performance is great, too. Highly recommended.

just got an 80 GB drive, but thinking about getting this one so my new 7500 AIW can do tivo in the living room silently. that and i don't want to move stuff around on drives (already have plans for the first 80GB... or maybe i don't and i just like the idea of 280GB of disk space...)

I have never received a package from Dell that was packed in peanuts. My 120GB drive was packed just like a retail drive with foam and no movement.

80GB Maxtor D740X UDMA133 is $2 less and get 133 bus and possiblity of those new bearings.

Why go Seagate not Maxtor then?

Is it because of the tech specs on Seagate contain this????

If I am not mistaken, the Seagate drive also has fluid bearings. Also, don't you need an ATA 133 card to get the ATA 133 benefit? Not sure if there are any motherboards with built-in ATA 133 IDE's at this time.


By the way, my drive was packed in a clamshell in a box with 2-3" of foam on both side and placed inside a second box. Nice packing job for the people that were concerned.

Why go Seagate not Maxtor then?

From what I observed on newegg's customer reviews, I thought Maxtors are the best, coz these were bestsellers, IBM's were giving problems, also I thought ATA133 would give it a big performance edge but when I read a couple of reviews of the Maxtor's ATA133 HDD's the reviews suggested that there wasn't much performance difference, also at ATA133 the CPU usage was around 50%, very very high compared to the CPU usage at ATA100. Perhaps that was because there was only one board available for ATA133 at that time (didn't find any reviews with ATA133 cards) So as far as speed was concerned, Maxtor didn't seem to get any huge performance difference.

When I found about Seagate's Barracuda IV (40GB per platter), I read from reviews that it is quieter than the Maxtors, even quieter than the Maxtor's "L" series, the one with Liquid dynamic bearings. Also, I didn't read about any failures on this drive.

I think there isn't much speed difference between Maxtor D740X's and Seagate Barracuda IV's, but to me Seagate is the winner for quietness

I have both a maxtor liquid bearing and a Seagate. The seagate is absolutely silent, the maxtor is not, I can still hear it. Both are about the same drive IMO give or take a fractional degree. However for a DAW computer, silence is mandatory for me. When watercooling goes on this next week, the HD will be the loudest thing in my machine.
