Seagate Buying Maxtor

i had 3 maxtors fail last year. i buy only seagate now.

my maxtor 245MB still works. i buy whatever brand there's no reliability difference. just subjective opinion because one brand or another failed on someone sometime.

Awesome!!!! I hope their junk never ruins anyone's day again! That's the most common cause for a bad day around here. A bitchy person with a dead hard drive who's lost all their stuff because they didn't back up. The dead drives are 100% always Maxtors... woohoo no more crap!!!!! I hope at least!

Not to bust your chops, but can you show me where 100% of all drives that fail are maxtors?

Hard drives have moving parts. Small moving parts. They are going to break. Your completely stupid if you dont keep a backup image or backup file on dvd anymore. With the price of dvd-r's and burners... it just doesnt make sense. Oh wait... it would make too much sense for the common person to actually be able to work on their pc's too.

WOW, this is really something, Segate buying out Maxtor. Boy this is going to be interesting. Personally I have used Maxtors for almost 7 years now and have used 5 different generations of their drives and have beat them to hell almost 24/7 for the past 7 years, since computers are my business and I work on them constantly and have never had a Maxtor fail, but anyhow I'll take what works.

I can't say I'm a Maxtor fan boy or anything, just been sticking to them is all because they've worked great for me. I've been running, for about 2 months now the new Maxline III 300GB SATA with the 16mb buffer and they fly, I really love them at this point.

Oh well, guess I'll be buying Seagates next go around.

In the meantime, sure would like to know what's going to happen to our Maxline III 5 year warranties?

I wanted to buy a HD maker earlier year. I looked at the fundamentals of Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital.
I didn't think Maxtor could generate sharholder value, with all their crazy rebate deals.
Seagate looked good, but it wasn't as much of a value play as WDC was. The stock is in an IRA account, so I've got plenty of time for it to "mature".

Funny how many mixed feelings there are about drives... I've had the worst luck in teh world with Maxtors and never (ever) will buy one or use one again if I can help it. On the other Hand I've never had any problems with any of my WD drives.

I think with Maxtor, they had quality issues a couple years back. I remember working with Maxtors back in early 90's and they were pretty reliable, whereas just touching a Seagate drive caused it to crash. In the late 90's that reversed. I think the current gen Maxtors and Seagtes are both OK, though. If Dell is using them, they must've worked the bugs out. I wonder if that's why Seagate bought them - a lucrative Dell contract.

FYI: Drives purchasing decision by Big OEM is not like us, going around Fry's and pick the best deal after rebate.

They have their own standard, and test 1000 drives in an array for 1000 hours with a particular access pattern, temperature range, vibe, voltage variation, etc.

Thats' why they always get the Prime drives, and any "crippled" drives that they do not wants end up on the retail space (i.e. all those 120GB are 160GB cripped because 1 of the head/disk is not working or is not good enough to make it a 160GB, so they tune it down to lower density).

FYI, those HD problems we have are from 1-2 years ago and the process/material problem is fixed. That shows you how long a glitch in manufacturing can last and drag down an otherwise good running company.

That's a fairly ignorant statement. Seagate kept it's 3 year warr. on desktop HDDs when others were dropping to 1 year... for a reason.

I've dealt with thousands of HDDs over the years, and Maxtor has a high failure rate in comparison. Of course this is anecdotal, so YMMV.

In general, WD/Seagate>anyone else.

The thing that scares me about this is that Seagate quality might suffer, but I seriously doubt that'll happen.

Get over yourself all the "this" harddrive maker is the worst etc... All hard drives will fail at one point. So saying XYZ is the worst just shows you don;t know jack about hard drives when you say "this" one is the best and "this" one is the worst.

Well...he is right. I have statistical data that shows that Maxtor is the least reliable brand of hard drive put into machines. I replace hundreds of them per year.

drr.. I'm pretty sure seagate went to 1yr as well on their retail line. Granted, for a short time... they were the first to now offer 5yrs on their retail line. regardless, I have always been a fan of seagate mainly for them being pretty damn quiet for quite even after a year of ownership.

Samsung beats them noise wise for the last couple of years. Samsung made drives as quiet as Seagates Barracuda IV/V lines. The later Seagate models have gotten noiser. They have some pretty good prices on the constant sales and rebates at Best Buy, but I'll stick with Samsung and WD (solely for the Raptor series) for now.
