You are absolutely right...this is pretty hot.

I'd bet they are sata - the Pro models have eSATA

Yes, AFAIK all internal desktop drives are available as either EIDE or SATA. External drives are just internal drives in an external box.

Sorry for the n00b question, but could someone help me out with the capability of these external drives?

My friend is looking to do an automated backup on her two desktops (less than 200GB on each computer). Do these external drives typically come with software that automates this process? Are the two computers connected to the one drive through a cable and maybe the network, or would she need two external drives?

Assuming that two computers can be connected to one drive, is the backup software smart enough to backup two computers without overwriting one another?

Sounds like a very good deal.

I bought a 500GB WD My Book Essential Edition from CC on Sunday for $147.99. CC is advertising $169.99, BB is advertising $149.99 so the 110% price guarantee made it $147.99 at CC.

The Seagate here is $139.99, an $8 savings. One question: does the Freeagent turn on automatically when the PC its connected to boots up (same with shutdown)? The WD does this and seems to be a WD-specific feature. I think this is great...but I think people would prefer to save $8 and get a 5-year instead of 1-year warranty.

I called Seagate and the CSR couldn't tell me which it was. He said it could be either.

They are 16 meg cache.......IDE or Sata?

mithrandir2001, I'm pretty sure that the FreeAgent enters some kind of "soft off" state when you shut down your PC. The power/activity LED bar turns off and the drive spins down when you power off your PC, and the LED lights up and the drive spins up when you power on your PC. The drive also spins down after a period of inactivity.

I bought the 320GB FreeAgent this weekend. It came pre-formatted NTFS, which is the best option for such a large drive if it is being used with a modern Windows-based machine (will need to be reformatted for most Linux distributions and, I guess, Mac OS). One side effect to the NTFS formatting on my machine (I think) is that I can't remove the drive via the "safely remove hardware" option in Windows XP. I'll have to shut down the PC in order to disconnect the drive.
