Seagate GoFlex Home NAS is very slow

Hi,

I have just bought a new/formatted seagate 2TB goflex home NAS and the setup was very quick and easy and both my computers immediately recognized the drive. However, the speeds are unbelievably slow - copy speed is about 1.5-2MB/s and copying 1gb takes about 10-12minutes. Reviews on the drive say that i should be averaging about 10MB/s.

Any idea as to what the problem might be?

Computers:
Desktop: Intel i5 2400 running windows 7 home premium connected to the router via gigabit ethernet.
Laptop: Apple macbook air June 2011 on osx lion using wireless.

Both get exactly the same speed.

Yap, those type are slow 10MB is the what you get from them.

You need fast you have to spend more $$$ on a semi-pro NAS enclosure.

Or best set a low power consumption computer with Windows Home Server (might be less expensive than buying a fast NAS enclosure).

If you want speed on the network and on the device you need a beefier NAS with decent ram and it's own processor (i.e. a SOHO device like ones from Synology or QNAP).

I worked on one system that sped up considerably after uninstalling Norton Internet Security. Not sure why, maybe an update at some point screwed it up, but it was creating a lot of system problems including an extremely slow seagate backup.

Oh, I had the impression that it would be a little bit faster. At least reading speeds are enough for HD videos not to skip.

Therefore what I am doing for now is transferring files onto it by USB (had another seagate usb dock - the hard disk itself is in an enclosure and you can swap the docks) and then using it for occasional backups and streaming.

Thanks but i do not have a continuous virus monitor installed. I basically stay away from installing shareware/spyware/take care what files I open and then schedule a full system scan weekly. Virus scanners are like a virus themselves
