I just received a new harddrive from newegg, when i try to load windows xp to the drive, i'm getting this error massage General Protection Fault and some codes. Is this mean i have a bad harddrive and i need to have it replaced?
Did you follow all of the standard steps to install the disk? I would double check the cables and if there is any installation software use if first. Sometimes disks ship with disk tools to partition and even format new drives.
Also, check the BIOS to make sure that the drive is coming up properly. If the bios is old, you might need an update.
The tools disk would also have some test software that you could run to verify the disk is working correctly.
Either a bad wiring, bad IDE controller, or faulty hard disk. A GPF occurs when the CPU is told to do something it can't do in the current situation. The GPF message occurs during Windows XP text-based setup?
this is an OEM drive, 400gb SATA2. there is no software or any cable comes with it. I'm using Asus a8n-e motherboard, i'm using the latest bios. I use the sata cable from older drive that i've replaced. when i put the old harddrive back it boot up just fine.
I just found out that the general protection fault only show up when i try to boot from win xp home CD. when i boot up with xp pro 64bit CD everything works fine.
Anyone know why i'm unable to boot windows xp home CD? could it be the cd problem? the CD doesn't have couple scratches on it. i really don't like the 64bit windows, because couple of programs i wanted doesn't support 64bit.
