Most of my hard drives are Western Digital and they're very quiet. I bought a 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive because it was on sale and it's loud as hell. It is not making the "click of death" sound, but it still sounds a lot louder than any other hard drive.

I'm running Bart's Stuff Test on it to see if the hard drive works and so far it's passing with flying colors. Is it normal for these drives to be loud?

Make sure your drive is mounted well in your case, it could very well be acoustic vibration.

That being said, I have 10 of these in a server and I've found that these drives aren't particularly loud, but they're probably louder than any WD Green drive that you may have. As long as it's not exhibiting any signs of disk failure (delayed writes, SMART warnings, clicks, drop-outs, etc) then you should be fine. Good for you for making sure the drive is good to go in the meantime with running disk diagnostics, though.

Hello, I have also had the same issues with the noise with seagates. I personally do not want to hear the head moving back and forth (reminds me of the old ST-225s) lol. I have two WDs that make no noise at all, but my 1 tb seagate is ticky, if you want to call it. Just have to live with it I guess.

Thanks for the responses. I feel a lot better knowing that many other seagate drives sound like this.

That's what I thought as well. I don't know any specific models, but I know my 386 from ~20 years ago was very loud when I turned it on. The hard drive would make a bunch of clicking noises and sound like scratching nails on a chalk board, but I turned that computer on last year and the drive still works.

I had a Seagate 500GB notebook hard drive and it sounded like fingernails scraping on paper. It appeared to work just fine and did not have any errors, but I ended up returning it for a Western Digital because it was very audible even in a moderately noisy room.
