Good deal. If I didn't already have an SSD in my notebook I would strongly consider one. 60GB's really just isn't enough space.

yea for a notebook i wouldn't get anything less then a 100gb. 60gb really is to small. for a desktop, 60gb is fine.

i am running a intel 160gb and ocz 120gb in my notebooks.

I wonder why they went with SLC flash? Maybe so they wouldn't have to worry quite so much about wear leveling?

It seems like to me having more capacity MLC flash would have made more sense.

The Anandtech review is very glowing, but before jumping on this deal, everyone should check out this review at Tom's: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/seagate-momentus-xt-hybrid-hard-drive-ssd,2638.html

Significantly less glowing. It's likely things will only get better with firmware, so it might still be a good compromise for some. Just don't go in thinking it will work like an SSD and you won't be disappointed.

hmm wow, i didnt even read this review, only the anandtech one.

anyways i shall see how i feel about these drives once i receive them.

It doesn't do as well because Tom's only did synthetic tests. Reading Anand's review shows synthetic tests to be not so stellar.

HOWEVER...

What do people care more about? Benching faster? Or, doing their everyday tasks faster?

Did Tom's test show how long Windows took to boot? Or how fast applications started up? That's what Anand tested, along with synthetic tests.

Well said.

And what I don't understand is why people are surprised this isn't as fast as an SSD. Maybe because it's not an SSD? Just a guess there. It's not like there's some technology that came out and now you can "hot deals" your way to a 500 gig "SSD" for $120. Not hardly.

It's just a great compromise if you either a). don't have $500 to spend on a laptop HD, or b). really need more than 60ish gigs of storage.

Of course, if it's important that you be able to open all of CS5 instantaneously whilst copying a 10 gig file to a different folder, than you probably need an SSD.

the fact that these are faster than velociraptors is fantastic. Cant wait for the 2nd and third generations of these things to see what they can do. Wonder how these would do in raid?

Are you planning on using it in a desktop or notebook?

depends how i feel about the speed. but i did buy two, so one goes in the notebook and the other in a desktop.

im currently running ssds in both my notebook. but i plan to try one in my notebook to see if i can feel the difference.

Thanks for the heads-up. I ordered a 80GB Intel SSD for a nettop build and cancelled it because of the space issue. This drive is the perfect stop-gap until SSD prices come down from their stratospheric levels.

I attended a webcast from Seagate about these drives. The Seagate rep said that SLC gives them higher speed. He would not elaborate whether he means throughput or access time.

My guess would be that because the SSD portion is so dynamic when compared to a normal SSD, that the much higher durability aspect of SLC would be needed and because the amount of flash used is so small, the actual cost difference is not that bad.

Remember that on a normal HD or SSD, the data tends to remain fairly static, but on this, it is always changing.

FYI Tom's updated their review and had an apparent change of heart after further review they gave it a Best of Tom's Hardware award:

"Update: with more real-world testing under our belts, Seagate's Momentus XT is receiving our rare Best of Tom's award for excellent performance. This new hybrid hard drive combines up to 500GB of storage and 4GB of flash memory to maximize performance.

Article updated on May 26, 2010. For details, see bottom of this page."
