Just in case this deal ever goes live again...
Do I need AHCI capability to utilize a hybrid drive? I have a five year old Thinkpad that I was considering upgrading with a SSD, but the BIOS does not support AHCI, so I was advised against doing it. Will a hybrid do a lot of good in that laptop?
Thanks in advance,
Ron
I wonder if Samsung will ever improve the hdd by increasing the hybrid portion to at least 16GB instead of the measly 4 GB? I believe at 16GB hybrid portion the hdd will definitely be competitive against higher priced pure ssd's. At 16 GB the hybrid hdd will show its real strength of reliability and above average speed!
Thanks. A good reading but at a cost of more than $240 I doubt I'll be running to the store soon.
I hoped actual street prices would be lower - however it's selling on NewEgg for $240 right now. You can get a non-hybrid $750 drive for half of that price, so I think the price has to eventually come down.
Right now, anything that has a platter in it is just higher because of the flooding in Taiwan. Now that WD is back up and running there (much quicker than expected) and Seagate expected to follow, things should get back to normal and prices start to drop again.

The flood is in Thailand. Taiwan makes a lot of pc components, but HD is not one of them.
