Seagate or IBM IDE drives?

I am looking for a new 60GB HDD. I have run all IBMs before, but a couple of friends have Seagate IDE drives and rave about them.

I like quiet drives, so I am not sure how seagates compare. Any reason to choose one over another (prive is almost identical at newegg).

With the recent rash of IBM HD failures, I'd suggest going anything but IBM..

If you want a quiet drive, definitely go with the Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm drives. I have one of them and I can't even hear it. Honestly I doubt I'll buy any other brand again unless they have the same fluid type bearings the Seagate does.

All next generation drives should have FDB, and you can get the current Maxtor D740X with FDB though the majority are still using the classic BB.

As for IBM vs. Seagate...
IBM's 120GXP is somewhat faster then the Barracuda IV but it's also a bit louder.
Personally though, I'd pass on the IBM drive simply because if their extremely poor reliability status of late.

my advice, first do a search. this topic has come up a few times.
the 120gxp is a faster drive. i wouldn't worry too much about the 75GXP and 60GXP problems. IBM knew about these problems (due to a lawsuit) when they built the 120GXP. it is a better drive.
the seagates are nice but if performance is your game, go IBM.

Just to join the chorus, I'd say avoid IBM at the present. The 120gxp's may be a big improvement, but they're too new to tell. Seagates are solid, as are the current crop of Maxtors and WD's. Each has its pro's and con's, advocates and detractors, but you'd be hard pressed to tell much difference in real world scenarios.

Seagate. Definitely Seagate. They're the quietist and usually faster than the IBM's. WD's are good too, as are Maxtor. So I guess it boils down to not IBM!

I have 2 IBMs in two different machines.

75GXP in my desktop running Windows XP. This drive occasionally makes very scary noises; however, haven't had a problem.

60GXP in my server running Linux. Linux says that the drive pushes 23MB/s, I'm not sure I beleive it. Anyways, very fast, no problems.

I haven't had a problem with an IBM drive and would certainly buy from them again. (as Windows blue screens)

The Seagate IV series are so quiet you can bite down on them while transferring files and STILL not hear them.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Quantum hasn't been too bad to me either, but the Barracuda's have been just too awesome.

I am probably the only one here that can hear my barricuda IV 7200rpm drive.

Really, I took the drive out of the brackets, stuck my ear on top of it while it was defragging. I sware I could hear something... it's about as loud as my heartbeat.

LOL, that's funny. Most recent Barracudas come with AAM disabled. If you enable it, I'll bet it'll be much lesser than your heartbeat

I love these folks that are bashing the IBM drives. There is an option to see a compilation of the hardware that has been listed in the system rigs here on AT. The majority of hard drives listed in system rigs are..........IBM. supporting evidence

I use IBM IDE drives exclusively now and have not had a failure yet. I use Seagates for SCSI and can report the same level of satisfaction. I believe either brand would be a good choice. Maxtor also makes some nice drives. I have built several Maxtors in years past and have had no trouble from them.

FWIW the only drives that I have ever used that failed were Western Digital, but there are those that swear by them.

If your primary concern is noise level, go with the Seagate. If you want the best IDE performance your dollar can buy, go IBM.

I have no experience with IBM, but I've made it a rule to avoid them. They may not be as bad as people make them out to be, but why not when there's Seagate, WD, and Maxtor? I'd say Seagate
