I cant decide between two HDD`s - SEAGATE Barracuda serial ATA 7200.7 Plus 120 GB NCQ, 7.200 o/min., 8 MB cache, Model: ST3160827AS or WD 120 GB SATA (with no further details). Mainboard is Epox 8kda3j (754) so NCQ doesnt mean much to me.

Does seagate give 5 years warranty? Cos my retailer argues with me and says its "only" three

Seagate drives come with a standard 5 year warranty from Seagate, so your retailer was wrong

My experience has shown Western Digital hard drives to be loud, while I can't hear the 5 Seagates in my second system over the whirr of the 120mm cooling fans, which aren't too loud themselves.

I'd buy from Seagate although I LOVE Western Digital too.

I've had ALL WD drives in my good machines. The one in my mom's Compaq died and we got it replaced and it's running fine. I have 3 WD 80GB's in my main machine...one of which died on my RAID so I got that replaced. They're all running fine ever since though...*knocks on wood*

From personal experience...

I'd say get the Seagate, as WD drives tend to have a high pitched "whine" that really bugs me. But if you're really into silence (as I am) the Samsung drives will beat all in acoustics.

not as quiet as WDs in the newer drives. look in storage review's latest review.
WDs have better performance

right now, i would get a wd as theres some pretty hot deals in the HD fourm.

but if the prices were the same, i would go seagate because of the warenty

Hitachi beats WD but there is moving parts in a hd and when u have one running faster what do u think is gonna happen. all hd fail they have moving parts its like dlp color wheel for t.v's

the Hitachi has a higher burst read speed the Hitachi is faster go look at benchies. seagate may be reliable and quiet but they are average for speed.

I can never hear my WD HDD so I don't actually know why you guys say WD is loud.
The newer drives with FBR should be even quieter

I read somewhere that the 7200.9's were already out. The Hitachi T7k250 is on heck of a fast drive and it comes with a 5year warrenty just like it's cousin the 7k250. The only differance is the T7k250 is faster because of the higher density 125GB platters used. Those are higher than Seagate or WD's aerial denisities.

They have Raptors is why. My Hitachi is just as quiet as a Solid State Drive.

stop ratpor bashing, especially if you have never owned one
yeah it has a distictive sound, but not one that is any louder IMO
