Seagate:
PATA
5 year warranty
7200 RPM
16MB buffer

(though 16MB not worth almost anything, vs 8MB)
(Tom's Hardware 8MB vs. 16MB)

Maxtor:
SATA
3 year warranty
7200 RPM
16MB buffer
NCQ (Native Command Queing)

i used to say "maxtors, seagate, wd, hitachi all have similar failure rate"
but the latest batch has moved my stance on hard drives in general. i bought 2 maxtor 500GBs, 2 out of that 2 had ultra slow (unuseable) transfer rates. my friend bought a 500GB too. same thing. we refunded them all back to frys.com (they are great and quick with the crediting though... super quick so it may be worth the gamble for some of you.)

and then i found out 2 out of 4 300GB maxtors i had running in a RAID5 NAS had the same symptoms, when the time came to finally replace all of them to 500GB Seagates, i sent them both back to seagate for RMA. they gave me newer 2007 manufactured ones, but i have yet to test them out.

cliffs: be VERY weary of all Diamondmax 10 manfactured by Maxtor in the latter half of 2006 the whole batch has problems

The whole batch has problems? Do you have ANY proof to back that up? Complete and utter BS.

Price isn't ok, but not hot. It seems about normal. You can get 320GB for $75.

Sure do wish there was a simple and reliable way to track such "lemon" reports in a statistically meaningful way, separate from the manufacturer.

Anybody heard / know of a way to do that?

For more or less any product?

That could accomodate the heavy overweighting from people who have trouble, versus the universe of (good?) experience with a particular product?

it may be me, but 4 out of 4 drives for me, and 1 out of 1 for my friend, that's 100% rate for me. i may just be that unlucky. not sure

DHL will leave packages in plain view to the street without ringing the door bell or knocking. I heard some noise on the porch so I went to check and found a box sitting there. Fry's shipping box has FRYS.COM written in large red letters so I'd say someone has a free new HD.

4 out of 4 means you have something else wrong with your computer that is corrupting the drives. Either not enough power from the PSU, overclocking maybe, PSU going bad and spiking or things along those lines.

But to lie and say that 100% of all drives from Seagate/Maxtor is bad from the 4Q of 2006 is total BS. You're misleading people and have no data to back it up.

Yep, the drive I got is a 320 GB Maxtor branded drive, but it says something like "Manufactured by Seagate" and also "7200.10" on it.
