i used to say "maxtors, seagate, wd, hitachi all have similar failure rate"
but the latest batch has moved my stance on hard drives in general. i bought 2 maxtor 500GBs, 2 out of that 2 had ultra slow (unuseable) transfer rates. my friend bought a 500GB too. same thing. we refunded them all back to frys.com (they are great and quick with the crediting though... super quick so it may be worth the gamble for some of you.)
and then i found out 2 out of 4 300GB maxtors i had running in a RAID5 NAS had the same symptoms, when the time came to finally replace all of them to 500GB Seagates, i sent them both back to seagate for RMA. they gave me newer 2007 manufactured ones, but i have yet to test them out.
cliffs: be VERY weary of all Diamondmax 10 manfactured by Maxtor in the latter half of 2006 the whole batch has problems
