Seagate vs Samsung

I am torn between 2 HDD.

I either want to get the 160Gig Seagate 7200.9.

Or I want to get the 200Gig Samsung Spinpoint drive.

I am going to get to and put it in RAID 0 simply because i want to work with RAID, and tinker around.

My question is, which will be quieter? Which will perform better?

Will 2x very quiet HDD's be much noticable over 1. I am planning on putting these in a P180 case.

As many people stated here, Samsung are known for being more quiet. Check out the thread, and you'll find any answers you are looking for.

EDIT: And I'd have to recommend the Samsung, just because of the fact that I've never received a DOA drive, up until the Seagate 7200.9 160gb I just received. Granted, I'm sure it's not a common occurance, but that still makes me weary about ordering another one.

I now have four of them and they are amazing. I just picked up the 200GB one the other day. Whisper quiet and great performance.

All in all, the P120 should help Samsung maintain its reputation as the manufacturer of the quietest desktop drives on the market.

I really think there is no comparision right now in storage solutions unless you need > 250GB drives.

Get the samsung, I have the 200GB one you are referring to(SATAII right??) honestly it's so quiet I have never even heard it spin up....ever....and it doesnt run hot either, highest temp I've seen on it was 27C.

I love Seagate drives, own 2 myself, performance wise and noise wise they're great. But theman pointed out, Samsung have been getting great reviews. I'd go with the cheaper of the two, save a few bucks here or there.

Alway the trade off of performance vs noise. The Seagate 'Cuda IV and V series were some of the quietest drives ever made (sub-40 db, 38 db for the 'Cuda V single platter drives). But yet those were some of the slowest 7200rpm IDE drives. The 'Cuda 7200.7 series is faster but alos slightly noiser. The 7200.8 and the new 7200.9 series are as fast as the Maxtor and WD but also almost as noisy.

Don't have a Seagate but I have werstern dighital, maxtor, and samsung. The maxtor is very loud, the samsung is almost silent and the WD is in the middle.

samsung are quieter than seagate but they also run alot hotter and are slow.
seagates are fast and still quiet and fast and run pretty cool.

SPCR show the Samsungs to beat out the Seagates (not sure about the 7200.9's) in the low noise department.

If you are putting them in a P180, I guess the 'quiet' issue comes into effect if the rest of your case is quiet. Theres not much you can do for a try-before-you-buy situation but if you have the chance, pop an existing HDD in the P180 system, gauge how much noise its making and base a decision on that.

I dont think you can go wrong with either really.

No. Samsungs are quieter and cooler. There were some Samsung drives that use the JVC motors (instead of Nidec) which does sound louder.

Storage reviews, xbitlabs and spc have heat and power draw measurements which show samsungs are cooler and draw less power and consequently put out less heat.

If you're putting them in a P180, I would go for the seagates because you won't hear any difference.

I think Samsung is being underestimated. Its quieter and cooler and performance wise, isn't doing too badly especially for the newer drives with higher platter densities.
The newer 250Gb model is very fast. The seeks are faster and even surprisingly the transfer rate is faster than the 7200.8.

samsung's obviously quieter and though the 7200.9 isn't in the review, i doubt it will be too much ahead of the 7200.8 or 7200.7.

the samsung and seagate are around the same temps so no winner there.

it really matters on what you're doing to determine performance. in file unzipping/copying, one is better at unzipping/copying 300 1mb files and the other is better at 1 300mb file. so it depends on if you deal with large files or not.

otherwise, the Seagate is the best gaming drive as far, as level loading goes, and the samsung is better in most other fields.

I could not find a review for the P120 on Storage review. Please link to one if you can find it. They do have the P80 reviews from quite some time ago.
