Hello,

I'm looking for free software that can find files based on the file-extension, create a list and then delete these files.

Here is what I need it for:

I'm volunteering for a non-profit organization involved in refurbishing tools for 3rd-world educational purposes. We have a drive at work which has been pritty much abused by multiple workers and volunteers. The idea was that only media was to be stored there but it ended up being used as storage for just about anything. I need to copy the tree to another location, then find all files which do not have a media extension and delete al of those or I need to copy the entire tree excluding the files that do not have a media extension. The amount of media extensions used are not too many so if I can specify which extensions are to be included in the copy or excluded from the delete operation I'm probably fine.

Does anyone know of an application, preferably for free, that could do just that? It would save me an awfull lot of work! I tried to find one on the net but have been unsuccesfull untill now.

Thanks in advance!

This should be a snap without any special software. Just specify the file type ("type:excel") or extension ("*.xls") in Windows Search and let it sit for a bit and search the whole drive. Once you have a complete list, you can move all the files to a different folder for later review by selecting them all and dragging them to a new destination, or the just hit Delete if you want.

from a command prompt
dir *.txt /s > delete.txt

that will list all files with a .txt extension and copy the name to a file called delete.txt

del *.txt /s/q
will delete all files with .txt extension

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies. Once they finished and I get the "go" I'll try it out.

from a command prompt

del *.txt /s/q
will delete all files with .txt extension

I would do:

cd \
dir *.ext /s /b > extlist.txt
start extlist.txt

Bare output is much better for this type of operation.
