Sears Return policy

I bought a snowblower at Sears on clearance in April.

It sat in my garage for 6 months, then the 3rd time I went to use it the auger cable was seized up (frozen?) and that broke of the plastic cable holder clip - making it useless.

I took it to their repair center and they replaced the clip and got it back to me in a week.....meanwhile I was without it for 20" of snow at the weekend.

SO I used it on Monday when I got it back and it worked fine, went to use it again this moring and the cable is seized again.

I really don't want to be without it for another week, I just want a new one.....I have no faith in Craftsman anymore, so I would like a refund so I can buy an Ariens.

Will they agree to this if I yell loud enough....its soooo frustrating.

Yelling will not help, on the contrary it will hurt your cause. Speak with the person that sold it to you and ask for a refund. If you can not get satisfaction speak with a manager. When I worked at Sears all the stores had signs that stated "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back". If they still do, point that out to the manager.

Just look at the back of your receipt. There is no specific time limit. Sears is VERY good about returns in general. Your return time is "Within a reasonable amount of time". That could pretty much mean anything. When I worked at Sears in the shoe department, my boss made me take back shoes that were 2 years old and worn out. They would just say they weren't happy with their durability. We would give them a new pair. It was really stupid but they wanted to make the customer happy.

well since its over 30 days old, they would not take it back without charging me a 20% usage fee

Its ridiculous, I bought it April but did not use it until Jaunary so how am I goon know if there is a problem within 30 days?

If you bought it clearanced you're probably SoL. If it's got a warranty you should obviosuly be able to have it fixed. Most places also have something where if the same part breaks X number of times that they will then replace it under a lemon law type thing....

I worked for Sears for 8+ years and know their policies pretty well. I haven't worked there since 1996, so there is some possiblity that things have changed, but I doubt it.

Sears will allow you to return an item up to two years from the time you bought it. Of course, they will not allow a return if upon examination of the merchandise they determine that you have abused it, and they may not allow a return if you cannot provide a receipt or if they can't find the original purchase in their database. Otherwise, they will pro-rate the value of the merchandise and give you a percentage of what you paid for it. The percentage is based on national policy and is determined by how long you have had the item; every cash register should have a reference card near it telling exactly the percentage refund you will get.

Since you have had the item for nearly a year, I would take the 80% refund amount and be real happy with it. I think whoever you spoke with is actually giving you more of a refund than their national policy allows.

The alternative is to gripe to management. Remember that Sear's policy is "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back." If you speak to a manager who is not sympathetic to your plight, work your way up the management ladder. Eventually you will probably find someone who will listen, even if you have to resort to calling their national headquarters. They are real keen on keeping people happy.

We had a similar problem with our snowblower. Stupid Fvcking thing. This stupid bolt would break every time the damn thing started to take in some snow.

Walk two feet, snow starts being blown.......creak....creak....CRACK!!! Stop, get all the snow out to reach the bolt, replace......

Walk two feet again, snow starts being blown.......creak....creak....CRACK!!! :| Neighbors must think I am a crazy man as I am jumping around, kicking the damn thing and cursing.

Take snowblower back and buy blade for ATV. Finish driveway and road in 15 minutes

Sounds like you should lube the cable to prevent it from happening again. Complaining that it happened again is one thing but figuring out why it happened in the first place is another. You used the item it got salt/water in it...rust.. it happens. Oil or grease heck even wd-40 will prevent a cable like that from rusting up in the first place.

Blame all the rugrats here that brag about buying items to use and then return "because they are not satisfied".

A 6 year necro from a new poster but it's actually totally relevant to the thread, this is quite strange.

Fixed....

That's why I hate snow, I have to plow my 25'x75' driveway with a shovel.

 I ALMOST went back and edited it to exactly that...but it wasn't worth the effort....kind of like necroposting in a 6 year old thread.

I went to sears several years ago for a wheel alignment. On the second day (after getting the vehicle back) I had to keep the wheel at 2 o'clock just to keep the car straight. I went back to sears. The middle eastern guy who did car took it for a test drive and when coming back he rolled down the window and said "no way aligmnet this bad, no way". He proceded to put the vehicle on the lift and found a ball joint on the car the was "cleaner" than the other. He came to me and said, "work done on vehicle, your fault". I had to call corporate sears and speak to the regional manager who sent me to a different store to get my alignment re-done.

Make a big enough justifiable stink and you should be able to prevail.

I had a lawn mower that the engine seized after one use. given to me for Xmas and extended warranty was purchased by daughter.
Sears tried to have me pay for a new engine (shop price was 75% of the mower new).

Claimed the warranty was not valid because the engine was run without oil.
Yet, there was oil leaking from the block when I dropped it off. 1 months later and numerous calls to local management; they relented, stating benefit of doubt.

You better hurry returning anything to Sears since a lot of their stores are closing for good.

Its funny because most people say they'd refuse to buy some of the craftsman products and go buy a competitor, but it turns out they're buying from the same manufacturer.

Most of their tractors are still made by husqvarna.

Edit: And most of the stores closing are going to be kmart stores in unprofitable areas. I think you'll find that most sears stores will probably remain open.

Kmart was trying to leverage the Sears brands. Pretty much failed. Could not get to Walmart pricing and unable to move upscale to Target and company.

Yup. I'm not sure if the kmart sears buyout was ever a good idea...Kmart just can't compete with target and walmart. Sears probably should just drop its clothing lines but thats where it makes the most margin. I wouldn't be surprised to see offshoots of different parts of the sears company over the next 5 years or so. Maybe more of a stake in OSH and such. I did see craftsman products at costco recently which shows they are willing to branch the brands out.
