That's a terrible idea. You should never turn the PSU off when your PC is powered on. Don't you have a reset button on your case? Did you know you can force shutdown by holding the power button down?

Try resetting CMOS on your mobo, consult the manual

resetting the cmos is not going to do anything. this is a psu problem. the psu will not even turn on when i short the green and blk wires on the connector.

x and xp series need a small amount(1-2W) of load to turn on.. it's normal it doesnt turn on shorting black and green wires..
you probably harmed your psu ask rma..

I've never heard that you could damage a PSU, simply by turning it off by switching it off in the back. Can someone explain in technical terms why this would be so?

An older PC I had back in 2000 or so did exactly the same thing. It was dead after I flipped that switch on the PSU while the PC was powered on.

Classically interrupting current flow into an inductance results in producing a high voltage spike - that's how an auto ignition system works. Presumably a high quality PSU protects for such events, but if it doesnt then you can damage the MB or even another piece of hardware connected to the PSU. (Actually did my old Commodore 64 in by accidentally turning off the wall socket into which it was plugged. The wall socket was one of those that is switched via wall switch; ie, normally used to toggel room lighting.)

A possibility too is that the PSU damaged itself instead, but protected the circuits connected to it. Try another PSU first.

well i put the antec 550w into the pc and it does turn on. now my problem is the psu only has one pci-e conntector so i can not get the vid card plugged in. i do not have another card so i am screwed.
i also took out he 1050w psu and tried to put a load on it to see if it would turn on. no luck. dead as dead can be. i have not been happy with this psu from the start. it is supposed to be silent up to load but it is not. my enermax was a better psu.
might go get a new supply at walmart.

Which Antec unit is it? Generally a 550W unit with around 500W on the +12V should handle the system in your sig. You could use a molex to PCIe adapter.

Dont give up too easily.

Presumably you are using a display device that is known to work (as the OP stated that this whole situation started because of a dead lcd lamp). Next, verify in the BIOS that onboard video is enabled and that you are using the correct video ports (usually VGA for onboard) and that the external video card has been unplugged from the system for this test. (Also ensure that the video cable is good and that the monitor is configured to receive video on the correct input port.) If there still is no video, then installing a video card of known quality should be tried/attempted.

well i went and bought a corsair 700w psu at bb. plugged that into the pc and it fired right up with no problem. i then tried the seasonic with shorting out the green/blk and it is still dead.
it is amazing that i spent $200 for this psu with the knowledge that it is one of the best ones out there but it dies when i shut the system off using the on/off button on it. i will rma this unit today as it is only 3 months old. i love the supply as it is silent most of the time and running full load it is still very quiet.
the corsair is a good supply but under load i can hear the fan running. i like a silent machine.
thanks for the help. will post more when i get the seasonic back into my pc.

If the rig you're having problems with is the one in your sig....with that listed 6970 video card, you'll never have a silent machine when really using it.

well i have the vid card fan set to 47% which makes it pretty quiet at full load and the cpu is water cooled using nexus fans. the psu is the loudest thing in my case. with the seasonic i could just hear the system running at full load while playing BF3 at night.

i know that i will not have complete silence but i can get it pretty darn quiet.
