This power supply is one of the best out there. Read the in depth testing by JonnyGuru here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=326 And yes, this unit JG tested is an XP2, dammit!!!!

Excellent voltage regulation, excellent ripple/noise suppression, hit platinum efficiency without problems, and completely modular.

Normally I take Egg reviews with a pinch of salt, but this particular model seems to have coil whine issues. Anyone have that problem?

THe Low load test efficiency on this unit is nuts (about 86 percent). IT actually beats lower Wattage units at a 60-100 watt draw.

Perfect for my file server! And it has flat black Flexforce cables.

Ive read a ton about coil whine in seasonic power supplies, I have 3 and none seem to have it. Who knows maybe I just dont hear it. Or maybe you just have the typical whiny 15 year olds leaving reviews.

So - I see that this is a kick-ass power supply as power supplies go. However - is there a real benefit to changing to it?

Without calling out what I currently have, obviously that can't be answered with yes / no. But what things, generally speaking, does a person stand to gain by switching from a "crappy" power supply to this one? Reliability, lack of heat generation, more stable overclocking? What should a person be looking for, or contemplating, when deciding whether to pull the trigger or not?

Yea. Don't use crappy power supplies. Leads to lots of problems down the road. Many times it's the power supply that's the problem. Save yourself the headache.

The seasonics have a long warranty and will save money on power. at 89 bucks if you need an excuse this is it.

You get quite a few things by buying a good power supply vs. a "crappy" one. The include:

Much more stable voltage regulation, meaning your +12V rail(s) won't dip in supplied voltage much at all when the power supply is loaded. In other words, your +12V rail will deliver +12V when loaded heavily as well as when lightly loaded. Crappy power supplies....not so much.

Much better ripple/noise suppression. With a good power supply, the electrical noise that's generated when the ps converts the AC to DC and supplies power to your compuer is very much controlled/suppressed. A cheap ps, not so much, esp. at higher load values.

Better power supplies tend to be built with higher quality parts....capacitors, the pcb, etc., will be of much better quality. The soldering of the pcb and its components will be cleaner, more precise. And this should give a longevity to those power supplies cheap units can only dream about.

And there's the efficiency question. Cheap units, esp. units based on very old tech, can have efficiency as low as 70-75%. That means 25-30% of what's drawn from the wall is lost as heat. A nice high efficiency power supply, on the other hand, can achieve upwards of 90% or better efficiency. You can do the math for your electric savings.

Just a few points.

Gr..... I want seasonic fanless power supplies to go on sale dammit!

Do you really need fanless? This particular unit is fanless up to I believe 40 percent load. And seeasonic fans are quiet. Their high end units all uses San Aces.

EDIT: Apparently Seasonic made their fanless mode even better. Here's a blurb about noise from HARDOCP's review

HARDOCP said:
The Seasonic PLATINUM-660, like the PLATINUM-1000 and fanned X-Series units before it, has a number of things going for it in the quiet cooling department. All of these features we have seen before including excellent efficiency, an excellent fan controller with its Hybrid Silent Fan Control, and a quality San Ace fan. As before with these units, we have left the fan switch set so that the fan will run all of the time in order to maximize the units noise output but if users are so inclined they can select the hybrid mode which will give them fanless operation at up to ~30% load in most environments. Now, during our testing today, the PLATINUM-660 was like many of the other PLATINUM and X-Series units we have reviewed to date in that it was virtually silent in our load testing relative to our environment. At no point during our load testing today was it easy to pick up this unit contributing noise to our load testing environment. As such, the Seasonic PLATINUM-660 is yet another really solid and really quiet unit from Seasonic that would likely be well at home in any quiet cooling environment.

Now, if you read JG's review as well, you learn that even above 30 percent load the fan is only on in CERTAIN circumstances.

When the big sites reviewed the Gold series Fanless units, many of them pointed out that the fanless units were pointless. Seasonic Fanless units are 400 watts and 460 watts. The higher end units with fans don't even turn on up to 460 watts in most circumstances.

Glad I just read that it's NOT the same PSU as in the review. This is the XP2 that hasn't been reviewed. It might not be as good as the original like I know some other PSU by them aren't.

AFAIK XP2 is supposed to have better efficiency. XP are "gold" rated, and XP2 are "platinum".

Links backing up your statements would be beneficial to your credentials because the XP was also a Platinum Seasonic PSU

The first X 650w Gold Seasonic is better than the one I am selling, the KM3, according to the Jonny Guru reviews.

Seasonic X 650w

Seasonic X 650w KM3

EDIT: ... and i'm guessing the P in XP stands for Platinum

Another website gave the x750 KM3 higher marks than its predecessor though. I think it was HARDOCP, to lazy to check now. Most sites found the KM3 revisions to have slightly better efficiency marks. Even the review you just posted showed ripple suppression was a bit off compared to the earlier model, but still well within spec.

Yeah, that's the 650w KM3 and only results from JonnyGuru, not the 750w KM3.. I am interested in seeing review results from the Seasonic XP2 660w Platinum
