If it's anything like Portland (it is), it has very good food (high quality, low cost, gourmet kind of stuff) and nice nature.

I love Seattle for one thing. I can go from mountains east of the city, head west over two large fresh bodies of water, and end up in the Sound in less than 30 minutes. I grew up in Indiana and to see the vast difference in landscape in such a short period is pretty crazy.

Seattle is nice, but not a ton to do in the area. Pike Place, Space Needle but that's about it. Drive an hour away and you'll enjoy the scenery nearby

Olympic National Park and Mount Rainer National Park would be on my short list while I'm out there. Maybe even Mount St. Helens. Thought about actually driving out there and stopping at various places along the way, but thats a redonkulous road trip.

Been to both museums. Seattle's is not as big, but it has some things Wright Patt does not. While were tossing around air museums I recommend Pima County Air Museum in Tucson. It is two fences and a county road away from Davis-Monthan AFB, the giant boneyard. They simply take down the fences and roll some fabulous stuff across the road.

What are your faves? I've barely heard of any that I've seen.

Manny's is pretty much Seattle water - Decent Pale Ale
Mac N Jack's African Amber is pretty good
Nightwatch by Maritime Pacific - My favorite - A dark ale. Has a hint of sweetness to it. If you can get to Ballard that is where it is brewed. They have a decent pub also, The Jolly Roger.
Flagship Red Ale - Another delicious brew from Maritime Pacific
Pike's Place Brewery - i find most of their beers rather meh but Kilt Lifter is decent.
Hale's Mongoose IPA

Seattle is one of my favorite cities, although the weather can be a bit bleak. The summers are absolutely perfect though.

I concur. A sunny day in Seattle is better than a sunny day anywhere else. Water, trees, mountains. Can't beat it.

Portland is similar. The summer more than makes up for the months of rain.

They sell Manny's pale ale down here at a pool hall in Portland. One of my buddies loves it. Every time he orders it, I think he's asking for a mayonnaise pale ale, and the thought of what a revolting combination that would be puts me off for a minute. It is pretty good though. Kilt Lifter is great; haven't had anything else by Pike's Place so I can't comment on their other offerings.

So where would be good place to stay out there?
some people like to stay right downtown to get the feel of it. I'd look at costs and weigh that with places that are out farther but still a single bus or train ride in. If St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and the Olympic Peninsula are serious destinations for you, somewhere south would save some time on those day trip days, as well as some coin.

Olympia is about equidistant between those three and it has some charming bed and breakfasts. The town is definitely a bit on the quaint side though and there's basically nothing to do but use it as a base of operations for adventures out to scenic destinations. I think you'd be better served by staying in Seattle proper, and maybe devoting a day to getting an early start and driving to Mt. Rainier (Rainier has everything you'd see at the Olympic Peninsula or St. Helens and it's closer to Seattle than the others). Another option is to head north to the San Juan Islands. Depending on when you go, you can do whale-watching or orca-watching kayak tours. Something to consider if you're the outdoorsy nature "paddle around with giant sea mammals" sort of person.

Second Rainier. Every time you turn around, it's another jaw dropping view up there. Would be a lot of driving for a single day trip, though.
