You aren't understanding what I said. I know I mentioned that I had 128 GB+ (hopefully 256 GB soon). I'm referring to the articles. I'm basically asking you to point me to an article mentioning when you need and don't need a page file given a specific amount of RAM.

as uavaj seems highly knowledgeable... i think its fair to say he took us way out of normal and into the twilight zone... lol...

First off i can only think of 2 people out of the many i know who even have more then 96GB of ram... yet he's talking about 128GB.

About page file...
I hear mixes about it... some say u dont need it.. its an ancient relic of the past.. while others say some programs still utilize that ancient relic.

I have been fine either way... with and without page file... however i tend to leave at least a 1gig page file on reserve just incase i have an ancient program which will still call upon it.

Nah, in his defense, that was me that mentioned I had 128 GB of RAM with more on the way. On that particular box, I also run roughly 20 VMs and more services on that box and I use almost every single GB of RAM. I will be adding more soon and fortunately, SuperMicro just certified the board for up to 1 TB of RAM so I have an upgrade path. I effectively have a mini-datacenter in my house, much to the consternation of my wife. When she sees more boxes arriving for me, she just sighs.

The Mark Russinovich-articles is a starting point. When you have an understanding of how it all works, you can decide for your own if you really need one.

Funny, i got a 128MB reference for xp on low memory :biggrin:

I have disabled the page for XP 32 bit to see what things happen, must say the boot is 2 seconds faster withouth page. and it is real hard to run out of free ram with XP . So i started a ramdisk that takes almost al ram , now the errors happen when there is no free ram left . No fatal error by closing programs there is ram free again and the errors disapered .

For the time now i set the page complet disabled for xp, but with w7 it seems to need the page and makes a new one when disabled and reboot^_^

Don't be silly, you will gain a lot more if you create a RAMdisk http://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/ and move your virtual memory there.

With every reboot you will then get a completely clean pagefile.sys which will prevent the mysterious faults associated with a corrupted vitrual memory.

I think I made the same thought when I wasn't thinking properly. Its not a good idea at all. If you even think your pc is going to be running out of memory..ever, then having a ramdisk is clearly the last thing you want running on it. But if you are sure that it will never run out of ram and virtual memory using the paging file on the ramdisk, then that ramdisk paging thing is also quite pointless.

Might be a recent update, I've noticed my swapfile being used much more than it was before. This was after Windows was suddenly using more than 500MB ram over its usual 2GB, now they seem to have shifted it to the swapfile.
