Secret of Mana question

So, I am really enjoying this game, but when I go somewhere new to progress the story both my companions die... why for? i keep switching out their weapons to level them (they can only level the weapon skill to the max amount of orbs you have, correct?) but they still die on their own. I have them set pretty far to the bottom right on the action grid. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Should I level them more before continuing?

Use Sprite's Level 1 Freeze spell or cast Ice on your tank's weapon.

dunno I never had a problem with them dying and I usually had them set to whatever they started with on the grid 90% of the time. I generally gave the girl the spear and the lil dude the boomerang or some such so they could get some range.

Adjust the grid to your style of play.
Level up.
Skill up your weapons to max.
Skill up magic skills to max.

Game is cake with max magic skills.

Is your MAGIC leveled? Magic is pretty much the key to defeating all the bosses in the game.

If you want to get real cheap, there's a trick by which you can "hold" enemies by casting magic really fast. While someone is having magic cast on them, they can't move. So while playing as the hero or the girl, cast a spell using the sprite, and as soon as the spirit or whatever they call them disappears, you can cast it again. Most of the spell animations are long enough that a few of them will get backed up and you'll have to stop for a few seconds to allow the damage total to pop up. Then repeat. It's cheesy, but it sounds like you could use a hand.

If you haven't leveled your magic, then I suggest going to the upperlands, in the place where there are the sections with the four seasons. Visit the temple there and have grandpa heal you, then just run the seasons in a big circle casting magic until your MP is 0. Your magic levels go up with every spell cast. In fact, to boost the girl's magic, you don't even need to leave the temple. Just cast support spells right there, heal, repeat.

I played that game so much back in the day that grinding was a meticulous science.

You haven't mastered the game until all of your weapons have a weapon level of 9 and 99 points on all characters.

Yes, casting the lowest level spells using the lowest amount of MP repeatedly is the quickest way to level magics. Do this near a HP/MP pool for easy leveling. I used to get new magics and just level them before proceeding through the game. Doing this does indeed make the game a cake walk though.

i was able to beat the boss last night by using way more magic. I havent been accustomed to using it that much before. I'll level up the magic a lot more now.

Some of us haven't played this game for like 15 years...

Secret of Mana...wow, that brings back memories of playing the game with my buddies using the multi-tap. I think I still have my Secret of Mana SNES cart + box/instructions and the multi-tap.

And unfortunately yes, you do need to level all magic :[ It can be a grind.
