You know how shows like House, Grey's Anatomy, ER, Scrubs etc like to show how things get screwed up in hospitals? How new interns are flaming retards at times?

Yea, that DOES happen. Worst months to be hospitalized are generally July, August and December. Those are when the fresh out of Med School, brand new interns start rounding. Hospital mortality rates at teaching hospitals usually go up a few ticks during those months.

Example...and this is a kinda mild one. Patient of mine needed 6 units of regular insulin as her blood glucose('blood sugar') was 280mg/dL. My hospital has completely electronic medical records, ordering, charting everything. We page the intern on call. He says ok give me a few minutes. He calls back in 10 minutes and tells the nurse, I cant figure out how to put in a medication order so I'm going to verbally tell you to give 6 units of insulin. Then proceeds to tell her it's perfectly fine.

So then the nurse had to explain over the phone how to put an order in for insulin even though they give the interns cheat sheet books. He said he 'accidently' threw that away cuz he figured he knew enough.

That kinda stuff is scary as hell to me.

Yeah considering if someone doesn't get the message, that woman could have received 12 units or none at all.

It also goes back to the old saying we have, if it's not charted, it never happened.

If you submit an issue with little information or sound like a d!ck you will be last to receive help even if your issue came in first or with a high importance. You also get the generic response from us asking for more information. I tend to spend a little extra time/effort on the issues that come in that are well thought out with adequate or near adequate information. These receive non generic responses from us.

I've also noticed that our Mac users tend to be much nicer and more polite then our PC users.... Oh yeah, and if you have a problem with our program on the Mac you get to deal with me

the more spelling errors, caps, and !'s you use in a ticket, the more likely we are to ignore it.

same goes for consistantly submitting tickets with high priority.

Law School, for the most part doesn't teach you how to practice law. Thats why you are a grunt your first three years after law school if you go to a medium to large firm.

my set from last thread;

my coworker used to work for a quick lube place;

apparently, if your car carries an unusual oil filter size which they don't carry, they just wipe the old one and reuse it. If your car has a filter that's hard to reach, they just leave the old one on the car.

if you get a radiator service at a quick lube joint, they often recycle and reuse the antifreeze by collecting all the used fluid, filtering it, and adding more glycol/dye.

I worked for computer hardware distributor for a couple months;

no one makes any money off memory, cpu, hard drives. These same items are considered cash equivalent, so it's very hard to get terms/credit on these items, because it's like giving money upfront and then paying at the end of the month.

There is basically no quantity discount on almost everything. I've had deals of 100s of the same item in one purchase and you get maybe 1% off.

My friend is a law student, he mentions that a lot of "terms and conditions" you often agree to every day, are often not actually enforceable in court and hold no water.

So if you ever think you got screwed in a transaction because of terms you agreed to, a lawyer might be able to dig you out.

I'll try to go in chronological order, so thi may take a while:

1) Unsupervised workers in minimum wage foodservice jobs have very little concern for sanitation.

2) Of the 10 or so liquor store stock boys I've known who were under 21, all were thieves.

3) 3/4 of being a coffee shop employee is snobbery, appreciation of coffe is not a requirement.

4) Artisan bread costs pennies in ingredients (but there really IS a ton of overhead)

5) People pay thousands for each on-hold message you hear and they're written, and recorded by illiterate high school dropouts who know nothing about recording.

6) The underlying position of most tech support managers is that the appearnce of helpfulness is more important than actual helpfulness

7) The managemente decision making process of several fortune 500 companies has more to do with golf course conversations and traded favors than it does with success of the company.

8) Systems Administration is cushy because no one knows what the fvck you do.

In a restaurant where I used to work, expensive steaks were not cooked on the grill but thrown in the deep fryer.

We used to make forged connection rods. All you Chevy fanbois will remember the pink rods you would pay extra for? Well, they were just regular rods that an outside company used to pick through and thought that they looked pristine.

This was usually right at the beginning of a run or right after I touched up the dies.

At the BMW dealer I used to work, the alarm was never set, and the code is very similar to the one in spaceballs. The most expensive cars were parked inside the service garage that also never has the alarm set.

At the cabinet factory I worked in for awhile, the custom stuff you order through home depot/ikea/lowes, 99% chance you can get better construction and wood from some chinese importer at 30~50% of the price. If you really want the good stuff, get a small family business to build them for you.

At the custom clearance company I worked, a lot of the containers you see on the highway are overweighted (this is especially true for the ones from asia) and tend to have quite a bit of undeclared goods.

At the construction material company I'm at, when you're buying building supply like granite/sink/faucet. try to find the primary or even secondary distributor, chances are, there exists some that are willing to sell to the public as well, often at wholesale prices. Never buy huge amount of material at last minute and let me know, because now that I know I got you by the balls, I'm going to squeeze. And never act stuck up to people that aren't well dressed, chances are, that's the guy you're going to interview with.

For many years law enforcement has been able to listen to your phone conversations for 10 seconds without a warrant. If during those 10 seconds that officer hears something criminal, they may continue to gather evidence without first obtaining a warrant. This has been the case since before GWB was president.

At Congressman Tom Tancredo's office, among others, we will not pass along your comments that you "think he is a racist and ought to be ashamed of himself" along to the congressman, despite our assurances to the contrary. Sometimes we do take a running tally of insults, and occasionally we do tell him the worst insults, but we really don't care what ad-hominem attacks you come up with. Same with plans that are based on the presumption that a) he's running for president in 08; b) there's a Freemason conspiracy running the country; c) there's a conspiracy of Jehovah's Witnesses; d) the Mexican army is currently invading your backyard (although I can transfer you to constituent services in Colorado - not a heck of a lot we can do in DC about that); or e) your plan for revising the constitution to change the nation into 12 states, removing Colorado and Utah in favor of one big New Mexico.

If you return a movie at blockbuster which you think could be late, hand it to the cashier and don't just put it in the drop box. On a slow day, those drop boxes can sit without being cleared out for 4 or 5 hours, enough for a late fee.

Oh, by the way, "No late fees" means that you have one week beyond the due date to return a movie, at which point it's autosold to the account. You can take it back within 30 days, at which point a 2.50 restocking fee will be charged. If you try and take it back after 30 days, tough sh!t, it's yours.

If you're going to evade paying child support, try to stay out of the limelight or have any assets under your name or SSN. Also get a cash-paying job or start a business.

At Circuit City, the commission was the 3rd and 5th digit of the tiny numeric code on the price tage. So 01175345 would pay $15 to sell it. You didn't care about which product was actually better. You sold the one with the highest commission, and the customer didn't know any better. They no longer have that pay structure, but to this day I do not trust any salesmen.

Also, waay back when, certain companies would offer their own % commission. Sony typically offered they best commission % and, amazingly, became one of the best, most reliable computers you could buy. Emachines were the worst.

A depressing number of our buildings have multiple building code violations that will never be fixed until the building is renovated. For inspector walkthroughs we plan the route ahead of time to avoid those areas because if an inspector sees those violations, they become part of your project whether it was originally or not.
A number of faculty that should know better - commit building code violations and union rule violations in the name of 'higher education'

You do not want to hear any of those trade secrets.

Trust me.

Guy I work with now used to be a pilot for a major airline.. half the stories he tells me make me never want to fly again.

Do you mean stuff like this?

Text

According to 2005 transcripts made public by The Wall Street Journal in September, a British Airways 747 flew its entire 10-hour-plus route from Los Angeles to Manchester, England, even though the pilot knew that one of its four engines had caught fire and burned up 30 seconds after take-off. The pilot surprised the Los Angeles tower by radioing his decision to fly on "as far as we can" (after checking with BA headquarters, which might have been mindful that returning to Los Angeles would have meant dumping $30,000 worth of fuel and possibly incurring $275,000 in European Union fines for the delay). The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration initially proposed a fine for BA but recently closed its investigation. [Wall Street Journal, 9-23-06]

Sweet Jesus! :Q

Yeah, it has 3 more engines but the pilot had no idea what damage was done by the fire.
I was on a plane with a pilot explaining before take-off: "I know there's some cause for concern but if I thought it was really a problem, I wouldn't be spearheading this thing."

Hmm.... true enough. It's not like he has ejector seats...
