I think if you use the same username/password on each machine you won't have to type it in. But I'm not positive, and I see security as a good thing.

that is correct.... if the username and passwords match, you will not be prompted to enter one in when accessing the 2003 computer via network share

your question was answered in post #2 and than confirmed in post #3

When you first attempt to access the share windows will attempt to authenticate with your current credentials (whatever you used to log in to your current local session), if that fails it will prompt you. If you use the same username and password combinations on both machines you wont get the prompts.

BTW if you want easy file sharing I would suggest using XP Pro, it's easier to setup than 2k3 server for basic file sharing. 2k3 server is an OS geared for server use and is much more complex/robust than you need for simple file sharing across a home LAN.

So should I just toss my copy in the trash? Actually, I think I lost it...

No, I'm simply suggesting that he follow the old axim. Use the right tool for the job.

Yeah, I know. Like I said, I think I lost my copy anyways.

You could create a username/password on your machine that matches what is in theirs and then share your folder out to those accounts/security group.
