It seems PC-cillin 2002 is pretty reliable and caught all 3 viruses (in the old zip file.. I don't think anyone has tried the new 7-virus .zip file). However, the latest version of PC-cillin (which is now called Trend Micro Internet Security 2004), only caught 2 of the 3 viruses. Someone ought to try the new 7-virus zip file to see what it catches... or I can try it out later myself when I get home tonight. I have a "sandbox" machine set up via Microsoft Virtual PC.. I'm using it as my test environment for all the antivirus apps.. except Bitdefender & Panda, which are my final contenders, which I am testing on my live WinXP system.

Well, this isn't very reassuring, cuz here at work, McAfee VirusScan v4.5.1 SP1 with the 4.2.60 scan engine and defs 4.0.4321 (1/29/04 - latest available here) didn't catch ANY of them on DL, unzip and even a manual scan of the unzipped folder didn't detect anything.

Norton Corp doesn't impress either, caught 4

! E:\Download\Temp\virii.zip: Cannot open Win32.Torvil.B.exe
! E:\Download\Temp\virii.zip: Cannot open Backdoor.Iroffer.1217.exe
! E:\Download\Temp\virii.zip: Cannot open BAT.Kifer.B.bat
! E:\Download\Temp\virii.zip: Cannot open Trojan.Dropper.Kifer.B.exe

Nearly a 50% missrate, not very impressive.

Panda Platinum '03 v7.05 updated.

Catches all 7.

Ive been preaching about Panda being the best AV available for years now.. Maybe this test youve created will finally open a few eyes and give Panda the credit it deserves over all of the bigger companies IE Norton, MacAfee...

Panda does rock, but mind you, Panda Titanium Antivirus 2004 caught only 6 out of the 7. Maybe if I updated the virus info as of today, it might work (doubtful). But PTA2004 comes in a VERY close second behind Bitdefender 7.2. And yes, Panda definitely does blow Norton and McAfee out of the water..no question about it.

Norton AV 2002 with the latest update caught all three originally, but only caught five of the seven in the latest zip file. :frown:

Using PcCillin 2004 and the realtime scan detected the following without me even attempting to unzip the file and blocked access to all of them. basically rejected the zip file in mid download.
Virus Name
WORM_TORVIL.C
BKDR_IROFFER.C
BAT_REDWA.A
WORM_REDWA.A
SPYW_HIDEWIN.B

PC-cillin is great stuff.. too bad all they sell now is that Internet Security for $50. I won't pay for extra stuff I don't need (anti-spam, firewall, etc.). They'd be very smart to rerelease just standalone anti-virus software for $25 or so.

Maybe I missed something here but doesn't MacAfee an Norton charge about 50 for their standalone AV software then hit you for another 30 or 40 for the extras? Pccillin has always been 50 for the AV software unless you are upgrading in which case it is 25 and they throw in the extras free.
Norton AV 2004 $49.95
Norton Internet security(includes Norton AV) $69.95
mcafee virusscan+internet security software $65.90

That's interesting seeing as my Corp 8.1 with the latest defs only found 4.
I turned up Bloodhound to the highest setting, which found another, so 5 out of 7, that's not overly impressive either.

Any special settings you've changed?

Eight files scanned
one file deleted
six files disinfected
zip file is now empty, Panda Titanium 2004 3.00.00 with latest def's
IS THIS SPECIFIC ENOUGH

maybe Panda scans eight files = 1 ZIP file + 7 viruses inside...

Well, all you ppl that give Norton stick over how cr@p they are and I have never had a problem. In fact I scaned the *.zip file and this is what Norton Reported.
look on that link.... Norton only caught TWO viruses, it misses the one on the kernel32.dli!
i think that unknown00000.data is something inside the porn.bat file since NAV reported it as the same virus.

I don't see how that's possible. I had the latest Panda Titanium 2004 and it only caught 6 of the 7 viruses. Granted, it was a trial version, but it still had the latest updates. Hmm...

Yeah but Bitdefender and Panda are under $25 (Bitdefender is on sale till March 1st). I can't justify paying $50 for Trend Micro Internet Security when all I need is basic anti-virus software. I already have my own hardware firewall and anti-spam solution.
