i think this was posted in OT a while ago. if i remember correctly, it is just a cam behind the laptop with the video feed going to an active desktop.

edit - after reviewing the threads, looks like some might be photoshop. i'm not going to rule out the possiblity of a webcam type setup though. the problem with a cam would be the wide view angle needed with stuff right next to the back of the lcd.

That's what I think. Anyone who has ever taken apart an LCD knows that LCDs are somewhat opaque but not that transparent. Also, if an LCD were completely transparent, none of the pixels would give off light. The backlighting in an LCD is accomplished usually by a cold cathode lamp off to one of the sides diffused by a backing behind the LCD.

Gotta be photoshop. One pic without the laptop, one pic with. Take the pic with the laptop while the laptop has a single bright colour for the wallpaper. Just select that colour, delete it from the image, and make sure it's on a transparent layer. Overlay onto the pic with no laptop...

its not photoshop, its just someone took a picture and put it as their backgriund, then set up the laptop so that the background image coincides with the rest of the scene. They have tons of them at the website this link goes too.

Which kinda begs the question why people post that its photoshopped when it would take 10 seconds on google to figure out its not.

Seems to me like the photoshop method described by silverpig above would be easier then trying to line up everything perfectly like that. In any case, the images are clearly faked.

OLED screens could theoretically be made at least somewhat transparent, since the pixels emit light themselves. But there would still be wiring, etc. in the display that would not be clear. And you probably wouldn't want a transparent display in most environments, since it would make it harder to see what's on the screen. I don't even like transparent console windows in an X Windows environment; they give me eyestrain after a while.

when I was in HS my teacher had a transparent graphing calculator she could put on an overhead projector. It was monochrome though.

Well it's like Basseyhead said, they give off no light. There are SVGA color ones like your teacher had, people put them in DIY home projectors. Problem is, they don't give off their own light, needs a backlight.

Does it have to be a BACKlight? What if you mounted lights around the edges of the screen? Would the light penetrate enought to get to the center of the screen?

It is not possible, becuase thare is always the fact that light needs a place to end and you can not go ahead and beam a light. It would nto be possible.

he's right. I have done it with my monitor before, just take a picture of what's behind it, and make it your wallpaper, and take a picture of the monitor lined up well .

Either method is certainly feasilbe. Personally, my vote's on photoshop - there's only the single patch of glare on the panel, and it looks a little fake to me.

Then again, doing retouching for a living, I've seen plenty of stuff that I know to be real that looks *really* fake once it's an image.

That's what most laptop and computer LCDs are like. There's a cold cathode lamp off to one edge and a layer behind the LCD diffuses the light.

Did you not even read my post? Let me make it clear, this screenshot is on a website with 20 other screens that all appear to show transparant LCDs, but on the freaking site it says taht they are jsut a trick with a camera and a background set to look like whats behing it. Now *maybe* the website is lying, but personally I think its more impressive to do it with the digital camera and background than just doing a glorified copy/paste in photoshop.

EDIT: there, i did the 30 seconds worth of research in goodle that everyone else is too lazy to do and found hte website again:

happy?
