My window of tolerable lateness stretches from about 30 minutes to maybe 3 days.

I worked with a guy that was consistently late five minutes every day. Every day. How is it that somebody can consistently arrive late the same amount of time everyday but not arrive on time everyday?

technically, he is very punctual--concerning that specific time.

If you are not first, you are last.

If you are 5 minutes early, you are 10 minutes late.

4 years in the Navy and no one ever got written up for being early so that has pretty much worked for me in my working life.

You never know? Maybe they had a kid and they have to drop their kid off at a certain time and they don't really have a choice?

Why do you have to notice when someone gets in? Or when they leave? It's rather annoying. I especially hate people that think someone leaves early - because those are typically the 9:00ers and not the 8:00ers like me.

My nephew told me that at his job they give workers a 5 minute window for lateness. So, if you clock in during that 5 minutes you won't get written up. The same goes for my work, and other businesses like Lowes and Home Depo. Of course, people take advantage of this and are constantly late. I think it's stupid and it's another example that we've become soft as a society. I try to be at least 8-10 minutes early. IMO, being late constantly should be a punishable offense.

Do you guys have a 5 minute window for being late?

Different people have different standards. I agree with you. My wife could care less. I don't understand that viewpoint and it's a constant source of friction where I'm ready to leave and she's still doing other things. I get upset, then she gets upset etc. I've learned to just go with it. When I'm not going with her, I'm early.... unless she catches me walking out the door when she'll decide it's time to talk about something. She has little respect for being anywhere on time (even work). Her parents are habitually late - sometimes by hours. They don't even apologize for it.

Depends on the job but constant tardiness is disrespectful.

I don't officially open until 8:30 but I'm usually here by 7:15. Why? ATOT, of course.

disrespectful.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. It's rude, and done repeatedly it's disrespectful.

lol

She figured she was closer so she could do more stuff/sit on the couch longer and still be "on time."

Whoever said that had must have had a pretty relaxing job where they didn't have back-to-back appointments or schedule-driven agendas during the day

I had that same situation at a previous job. We just changed her hours to compensate, that way she was always 10 minutes early, but didn't know it

Depends on the job. I've worked in retail & food service before. You have to either be there to open the store, or be there to handle the shift change.

I currently do freelance IT. While the schedule varies a bit because I drive around the state a lot, I try to schedule specific windows for taking systems down (i.e. upgrading a server) or working on someone's computer, so they can plan out their day around the downtime.

Other jobs are famous for being late. Ever had to wait at a doctor's office way past your scheduled appointment time? Or wait for Comcast or some other installer to show up to your house? Hehehe.

We have flexible hours so you can pretty much come in when you want as long as you work 8 hours and get your work done. The people at my work who really worry about other people's hours are the ones who sneak out early, I think they're afraid that if too many people do it they'll get noticed too.

We have hours we're expected to be available (9am-3pm) but you can pretty much come in whenever around that time (technically at least one person needs to be here at 7:30am and one person has to be here at 5pm but we have enough early risers and late risers its never been a scheduling problem)

Good god. I hope you're salary. These concepts are completely foreign to me. It's a completely different work ethic than I practice. I'm not saying one is better or worse than the other. I think (hope) the difference is salary vs hourly. Salary I can see because your employer basically owns your time, and you are compensated for that with higher pay.

But these posts about getting there 30 minutes early so you can check fluids and crap before you even start working are out of your damn minds if you're not salary. Your employer has pulled the wool right over your eyes.

My current 8-5 hourly job tried to pull that shit with us once several years ago, saying we needed to be at our desk ready to work at 7:55. I told them unless they're paying me 25 minutes of overtime every week, I will be there only when I'm getting paid to be there.

i get to work about 2.5 hours earlier than most of the people i work with

it helps me get some real work done before everyone gets there, meetings start, and productivity goes downhill
