Seems like the dark age of computer games lately.

I am trying to find a new game to get excited about but it seems like the choices are getting pretty slim. EA seems to have all the sports titles locked up and are chugging along with 2003,2004,2005 and 2006 method of making games. That to me seems pretty stale. I would like some selection out there other than EA Sports. Tiger Woods golf is pretty much it for golf games now and I really don't care what kind of facial expression my golfer makes after he hits a shot. I also don't care how much I can modify his outfit either. That seems to be EA's main focus now. The golf courses are where the attention needs to be yet they don't look much better than when they changed over from PGA Tour Golf to the Tiger Woods name.. That used to be where you saw the golf titles evolve and get better and better. Now it seems EA has the only golf game license and they have their software teams working on the most varied selection of outfits and facial expresions in golf simulation history. Talk about loosing focus on what's important! How about a golf game that gives you the most realistic golf game experience to date. Photorealistic courses with moving trees, realistic water, ambient sounds for that particular course and ball physics that mimic real golf ball physics. How about making what I see on my screen look like what I see on my TV during a real tournament? I know we are closer than ever to creating a photoreal golf game but EA seems to have the only game in town and they are to concerned with making their golfer do different dances after a shot and wear the most varied selection of clothes ever seen in a golf game. EA's focus seems to be "Golfer animation first and everything else a distant second." Where have all the other competitive titles gone?

I would love to see a large selection of games again from different companies. The gaming industry seems to be on a set of rails and only has 4 or five themes. EA sports, MMORPG's, more first person shooters than you can shake a stick at, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and ......... and that's all that comes to mind really. How about some different ideas? Anyone..... anyone? I wouldn't mind seeing some more simulators coming out. I don't really care about what. It could go from a particular plane to a sub to a tank. I don't care what, just make something that is well thought out and engaging. Thats what is lacking in simulators today. Microsoft is it really for flight sims and there are no naval or ground based simulators being released that I have noticed. How about some martial arts based games? How about some games based on Samurai and Ninja's? I am just trying to come up with some different ideas that are lacking in the gaming industry today. I realize there is going to be some finacial excuse as to why games today are following the lousy trend they are following, but I can't be the only one who is getting tired of the same companies making all the games and just putting an 03, 04, 05, 06 or a II, III, IV after an already used title.

when a company like ea buys exclusive rights to sports teams etc, there really isnt any reason to innovate. especially since they dont have to worry about having any competition to deal with. just change a few things here and there, rosters etc, and slap a new 200x number on it and shove it out the door

The profit margins are too small for little shops to take a risk and try something innovative. They need to make sure they can make enough cash to make the next game. Big studios dont have to innvoate because they are big and can just knock out the smaller players. For things to change either free software developers need to start making great games, independant shops need to take the risk, EA needs to die, or a huge swing in consumer buying habbits.

These are all unlikley. I've gone back to playing old games, Icewind dale 2, elder scrolls, NWN, theif, etc. Its been a long time sense I've played them and they are almost like new to me. Plus I dont have to worry if cedega supports them. They are old enough that they all work in wine or cedega.

I think everyone to too busy playing WoW to be making good games. Good thing we have hellgate and oblivion to look forward to.

I was using that as an example of why I wanted more variety. I could have expanded allot on other games to, but the post was long enough and hopefully I got the point across.
