some of the humans ARE aliens?

Nah.

Making it "Cowboys & Aliens" instead of the more expected "Cowboys vs Aliens", which, interestingly, most every responder in this thread who referenced the title unconsciously transformed it to, is just a simple homage and allusion to the game so many kids played in the 50's and early 60's when "oaters" were the dominant fare on TV and in the movies.

The game? Cowboys & Indians. It led to legions of younger brothers complaining about always having to play the Indian, who unfailingly ended up losing to the hero cowboy.

That's all. That's it.

Haha, got it... my childhood was too politically correct to play games like that.

Ancient Aliens - Aliens and the Old West :awe:

Ancient Astronaut theorists believe aliens have been visiting earth for thousands of years. If so, might we find evidence of this even in the stories of America's Old West? In Aurora, Texas, the local cemetery claims to hold the body of an alien whose ship crashed there in 1897. In Utah, petroglyphs depict strange beings wearing what look like space suits. In southern California, 19th century ranchers reported seeing an otherworldly creature emerge from Elizabeth Lake. And even in Tombstone, Arizona, the home of Wyatt Earp and the site of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, cowboys claimed to have shot at a giant, metallic bird Are these simply campfire tales, or did the cowboys and native people of America's Wild West actually come in contact with alien beings from another--much more distant--frontier?

Oh, I hadn't even considered that. I was getting the impression that there was something deeper to it.

the very first limited trailer that came out like a year ago made this look like a POS. they redeemed themselves with the later ones just before release though and it looks like at least a decent flick.

I just got back. It was a very enjoyable movie. It was definitely different, excellent mix of aliens with the wild wild west. Surprisingly good flick.

In Grade school, or any school, the struggles between the Native Americans and the settlers was commonly referred to as Cowboys and Indians... and so forth

So, in the context of a entertaining movie that won't tax the good old brain, this worth seeing?

Yes that is pretty much exactly what it is. Entertaining, but nothing super complex or masterful. It has a lot of the "western" movie feel to it, just with the bad guys being aliens. I also liked the design of the aliens

I didn't really find it entertaining at all. And judging by all the traffic that left throughout the film - I'd guess that less than half of the cars remained through the entire film - I don't think I'm alone in that characterization. I've watched a lot of westerns, and most don't leave that many plot holes.

Beginning of the film shows him to be a cold-blooded killer. He kills the three guys whose only crime seems to be to assume that the guy is a wanted man because of the cuff on his arm. But after that, he's not portrayed as a cold-blooded killer.

Okay, the brainwash thing was explained later in the film, but he completely forgot the escape sequence & how he got the bracelet on in the first place? The place was crawling with aliens - but no one came after him after he opened fire inside?

The good alien girl - how the hell did she know where the core of the ship was?

I found the western part to be rather lame. Most westerns have some degree of suspense or anticipation, but there was nothing to anticipate. The first 90 minutes was mostly boring dialogue, occasionally interrupted by some Star Wars x-wing fighers that grabbed people using the exact same grappling hook type of thing that they used in the Matrix to pull Neo out of the water. You didn't actually get to see an alien until quite late in the movie. And, by "alien", they meant the predators from the movie Predator.

Oh, and they can't see very well in the light. You can sneak right up to the mothership in the open. But, as soon as you throw in some dynamite, that seems to fix their vision quite well. Giving the little kid a knife and telling him to be a man, well, it took long enough for the director to give the kid a point blank shot to stab an alien in the heart. The director must have been asking himself "okay, bullets aren't killing these things very quickly. How can we make the aliens so that the kid can kill one instantly with a knife? I've got an idea. Lets make hands that come out of it, kind of like the worms in Tremors.

Bah, I could go on with a list of things that I found annoying with the movie.

For some reason when I saw the alien let out those little hands I almost cried out in the theater,

"QUAID!"

side note, was entertaining flick even if it had several problems with cohesion. Then again I felt it wasn't trying for exact cohesion in explaining everything either so no big deal there.
