AMD for speed, overclocking, and headaches.

Intel for stability.

If using SQL, VMWare, etc. recommend Intel.
(you will probably get just as many AMD recommendations)

Both of those can be nice stable systems if you build them with appropriate, good-quality components. Here's my AthlonXP/A7N8X-Deluxe system that I spend my workdays with: link. The only "headaches" I get are from lack of coffee I do intend to slap another 15000rpm hard drive in there, maybe one of those hot Fujitsu MAS-series.

Anyway, it is quite stable... it happily runs any or all of the following at once, thanks partly to the wonders of 15000rpm SCSI and lots of RAM:
  • multiple concurrent Office2000 Disc 1 and Disc 2 installations over the LAN
  • McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Console
  • PhotoImpact6
  • HP ScanJet software, locally or over the LAN (I host the scanner for my co-workers)
  • Computer Management console
  • Internet Exploder
  • Outlook
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Access
  • McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1, full heuristics and the works
  • Acrobat Reader
  • Heavy WinZip compressions and auto-extractor creations, with ~500-750Mb of data
...and if I happen to be doing all of that when the daily virus scan starts at 12:10PM, it will plow through that as well, although the responsiveness drops due to the full-throttle disk and memory traffic (naturally).

Welcome to the Forums, by the way.

AMD is worth considering, in my opinion. My work computer is my property, bought with my money, so I have certainly put my money where my mouth is I also have 24 AMD systems among the 80 that I maintain at work, and they are working very well. Next fiscal year we will be adding more of them, probably with AthlonXP 2400+'s.

Intel is also a fine choice. If you get the Intel system, you should not get DDR333 memory, you should get at least DDR400 (PC3200), because the Pentium4 2.4C will need that bandwidth. And make sure you get two modules so the dual-channel memory controller can run in dual-channel mode, or else your performance will drop a lot.

Either way, buy a high-quality power supply (I suggest Antec TruePower 330 or higher) and high-quality memory (for guaranteed compatibility, use Crucial.com's memory configurator and they will guarantee it to work or your money back).

Is AMd worth buying.

They are both worthy motherboards.
They are both basically identical in performance.

My personal reason for recommending the Intel board over
the AMD has to do with nVidia and its chipset.
They seem to like rushing chipsets out the door these days.
(just try using a Non-nVidia video (i.e. ATI, S3, etc..) card in that
motherboard and you will see what I mean)

The Intel solution definitely has better (more stable) driver support.

I use an ATI video card in my A7N8X-Deluxe, as do many folks. What's supposed to be the problem?

What would give you a reason to be argumentative.
I am just stating an opinion (which was requested by the poster).

But, depending on the revision of your motherboard; (just a few examples I've come by)
with ATI Radeon 9700 - non powerup issue [rev 2 MB]
with ATI Radeon 8500DV - cannot resume from S3 state (suspend/standby) [rev 2 MB] -even w/BIOS update
with Hercules 3D Prophet 9700 Pro - video corruption [rev1.02-1.03 MB], no powerup issue [rev 2 MB]

Have yet to see an issue with ANY nVidia based video.

Just my experiences. No need to argue or flame.

You may want to take a look online to see what you can get.

If you're set on getting it local, then you need to ask yourself how long you feel like waiting.

I have always liked Intel, however, their prices are a little high for my blood.

Since money isn't an object, then it comes down to waiting.

On the other hand, the nForce2 chipset for AMD have been absolutely amazing. According to all sources, relatively stable. So if you wanted a learning experience and more value then I would recommend AMD.

If you want an Intel system and cannot buy the P4C800, consider the Asus P4P800-Deluxe as an alternative. Based on the problems that i865PE and i875P owners are reporting with low-latency memory modules such as the Corsair XMS3200LL's and TwinX 3200's, you should pick modules that are not programmed for very low latencies. If I were getting one of those two motherboards, I would buy two 512Mb Corsair XMS3500 modules as Corsair recommends, or else the Corsair TwinX 3700 that is specifically targeted at i865-family and i875P boards.

Good luck with your new system, whatever it ends up being Where do you live, anyway?
