Would it be OK to run the dnet client off of a floppy, on a computer in which you are using but haven't asked for permission?

I was thinking that since Kilowatt could fit an OS and a client on a floppy, it would be pretty easy to stick a Windows client on the floppy. When you start using the computer, you stick the disk in and start cracking. When you are done, you shut down the client and remove the floppy. Is this Ok because nothing is being "installed"?

It is possible to run the client from a floppy, but it is against the terms of the project to run it on a computer that you do not have permission to use...

This is kind of a "gray area."

Personally, since you seem to have permission to "use" the machine while you are sitting in front of it, there should be no problem with sticking a floppy in and running the client while you're sitting there. I seriously doubt anyone would complain.

The only situation where this might be a problem (that I can see), is if you work somewhere and they have very strict policies about "non-standard" programs. It could get you in trouble.

For the most part, I don't see a problem with it. Have fun!

I don't see anything wrong with it.
You must of been granted use of the machine to start with, since you are after all using it.

I would be a lot faster to put the floppy client in a folder on the floppy.

Then all you would have to do is copy the folder off the floppy onto the desktop, and then back onto the floppy when you're done at the machine.

Flush/fetching to and from a floppy will be real slow.
I will take 15 secs (or so) to write the completed block back to the floppy, and load the next one off it.

Being on the desktop, it's almost instantaneous.

I used to do that on customer's machine, if they were left overnight.
Now I just stick in a nic, unplug the power to their drives, and load up Klinux.

That's good to know. I used to do that with the DCypher Gamma Flux program (and especially with the original Java version), but stopped when they started paying. You may see a few more RC5 blocks from me pretty soon.

I would have to say that you need to ask for permission. Many businesses and organizations such as schools have policies against using their computer for personal gain (such as winning 1000 dollars). For example, many schools might suspend your computer rights for a period of time.

I don't want to tell you that you absolutely shouldn't run the client on the computers, but rather that you should check any rules. If in doubt, ASK SOMEONE!
