Anyone ever try taking Krav Maga classes? I'm thinking of taking some classes starting in May.

For those of you that don't know what Krav Maga is here is an small explanation.

What IS Krav Maga?

Krav Maga (Hebrew for "contact combat") is the official self-defense style of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Special Forces, and Israeli Police. In the United States, civilian men, women, children, police officers, the FBI, sky marshalls, and various armed forces have trained in Krav Maga.

All I know about Krav Maga is that it's supposed to be on par with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for real-life effectiveness (very high) and it's really hard to learn (relative to other martial arts.)
Good luck!

I would pick a discipline that has proved itself in the UFC. Maybe Gracie Jiu Jitsu or something like that. Kung Fu was quickly shown to be a bust, while it looks good on TV when you actually put two fighters against each other it just doesn't work.

I've never seen someone using Krav Maga win a fighting tournament, so it's not fair to say it's on par with an *established* fighting discipline.

You couldnt be any more wrong. The whole idea behind Krav Maga is that it is EASY TO LEARN and EASY TO REMEMBER in times of high stress.

Its more of a self-defense style not a competion style like karate and all others.

Jennifer lopez learn it for the movie 'Enough'

I also like that is not like going to a karate school where you need to wear all the special clothing and have all the rules and discipline.

All i need is some sneakers, shorts or sweat pants and white shirt.

The less formal, and the more adaptive a discipline, the better. That's why karate and the like are jokes in a real fight, and you need something that real fighters use, like in the UFC, or in the military, though as mentioned above I'm not sure how well these military ones necessarily fare, though it's safe to assume they are more useful than somebody learning katas in a ghee <sp>.

Take classes? *scoffs* All Canadians are required to be proficient in Krav Maga by age 11.

Sure would be funny seeing a judo packed with people in ghillie suits.

It's "gi", btw.

And the ones who aren't... are never heard from again.

I don't know if that's really fair. The UFC pits two highly trained martial artists against each other. On the street, I would think the chances are that you will not be conronted with someone who has extensive martial arts training. IMO, a self defense system can be practical while not being a good "sporting" discipline.

If you are truly threatened, just go for the balls and the throat and be on your way...

oh, and don't bring a knife to a gunfight...
