www.pcip.gov, but this October you can use the new exchanges as Obamacare drives down the price and get far better rates than Cobra.

PCIP = Preexisting Condition Insurance Plan

Why would you suggest a 27 year old married male with no preexisting conditions enroll in PCIP?!?!?

1. The premiums in PCIP will be grossly overpriced compared to the traditional market, since everyone in it has a preexisting condition; and
2. #1 got so bad that in states where the fed is running PCIP they have closed new enrollment.

That's a completely irresponsible suggestion.

I just pay out of pocket right now. Because lil rudeguy has diabetes, our insurance would be through the roof.

I stockpiled his supplies before I quit my last job, so we are good on most things but insulin is still $400/month and my meds are roughly $70/month. I'm hoping to have insurance before he uses the 2 vials of insulin he has left but if not, then I'm in for another $400.

His question:

"Self insured and 1099ers, where do you get your health insurance? "

Irresponsible suggestion?

You're a doofus. First, the rates seems to be far below comparable policies from what I've seen.

Second, he can check the rate, if it's higher than others, don't buy it.

Oh, the horror! That could hurt him greatly, checking the price! You protected him!

Finally, you might be surprised to find something is treated as a pre-existing condition when you apply. It's nice to have an option. Your response was completely irresponsible.

As I noted above, you could check PCIP to see if it's a better deal. Bit late now though, but previously, it's nice to have 85-100% of it covered after say a $250 deductible.

Health Plan Cost for New Yorkers Set to Fall 50%

Individuals buying health insurance on their own will see their premiums tumble next year in New York State as changes under the federal health care law take effect...

State insurance regulators say they have approved rates for 2014 that are at least 50 percent lower on average than those currently available in New York. Beginning in October, individuals in New York City who now pay $1,000 a month or more for coverage will be able to shop for health insurance for as little as $308 monthly. With federal subsidies, the cost will be even lower.

Supporters of the new health care law, the Affordable Care Act, credited the drop in rates to the online purchasing exchanges the law created, which they say are spurring competition among insurers that are anticipating an influx of new customers. The law requires that an exchange be started in every state...

Administration officials, long confronted by Republicans and other critics of President Obama’s signature law, were quick to add New York to the list of states that appear to be successfully carrying out the law and setting up exchanges.

¶ “We’re seeing in New York what we’ve seen in other states like California and Oregon — that competition and transparency in the marketplaces are leading to affordable and new choices for families,” said Joanne Peters, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Just like the article(s) about massive premium increases have been debunked for twisting the numbers, that NYT article has been debunked.

no I can't

Note: On February 16, 2013, the federally-run Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) suspended acceptance of new enrollment applications until further notice. The suspension also became effective in the state-based PCIPs on March 2. This will help ensure that funds are available through 2013 to continuously cover people currently enrolled in PCIP. PCIP continues to provide coverage to more than 100,000 people currently enrolled nationwide. I have kaiser also. Been pretty good rates and service. Oddly mine went down. They lowered it because my health was so good after some tests

Lets hope they don't have plans to raise it because of obummer

I had Kaiser. Went to see them a few times for various things like a sore elbow. Then the company got downsized. Tried to buy an individual plan from Kaiser and they rejected me. The list of reasons for rejection was basically a list of each visit.

I don't know the extent of changes that ObamaCare made but the old status quo didn't work for me.

Kaiser is likely to have *a* plan for you, but get ready to spend a fortune. Until 2014, when insurance companies are restricted on pre-existing punishment.

I don't need an individual plan now since I'm signed up through work but going through that experience made me glad for all the changes forthcoming in Obamacare. I don't care what the haters say about it.

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield for my daughter. Though I didn't have a choice, they are the only insurer in the state who will insure a minor without an adult on the policy. My work insurance is free but is insanely expensive to add anyone to it.

You're an idiot.

Sadly it doesn't work if you are white, but many abuse the system that way. Miami has the largest amount of fraud in the whole system because it's easy for someone to play 'No Habla Engrish!" or speak creole, etc and act dumb then receive free health care and supplies.

That's not how it works. There is Medicare fraud, but you greatly exaggerate some paranoia of Hispanics. Florida is a central spot for all kinds of bad things, though.

Cobra should only be used as a last resort. Check out other options before ever considering Cobra.

COBRA just lets you pay what your employer was paying for the same coverage you were previously getting. Of course it's going to cost more than your catastrophic coverage, because it actually covers a lot more.

Keep in mind if you are over age 55 and need to rely on Medicade for any part of your healthcare insurance coverage under the new laws, the government has a provision to attach any assets you might have. Something serious and sobering to think about for mid-lifers who find themselves downsized out of their jobs, your healthcare insurance premiums might be a lot bigger than you think.

Just like the article(s) about massive premium increases have been debunked for twisting the numbers, that NYT article has been debunked.

I've personally priced our (self-employed) health insurance under Obamacare-good health, no major preexisting conditions) and our rate will drop at least 40% and no more $15,000 deductible. Certain people have a political need to spread lies and BS, but I think it is going to bite their party in the *ss once Obamacare kicks in. The same garbage was said about Medicare in the sixties, when Saint Reagan labeled that socialism.

To the OP-get what makes sense for at least the rest of the year, but definitely check out Obamacare when it goes on line. Hopefully you live in a state where the controlling political party doesn't have a vested interest in sabotaging the rollout.
