In the short period of time I was 1099, I went to my friend's mom who is an insurance broker. She shopped around and beat COBRA by a good amount.

It was about 5 years ago for me, but I met your list almost exactly (not overweight though). I was ~$35 per month. The wife was more because women have more healthcare visits at the time, I think she was in the mid-$70/month range. Of course, that was catastrophic coverage only and before the new healthcare laws were passed (which makes it much more expensive for a young male). But seriously, check out Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Cobra should only be used as a last resort. Check out other options before ever considering Cobra.

You will probably end up with a "major medical" plan, which is how you stay down in the $100 range as a young male with no pre-existing conditions.

My wife gets it through my employer.

Costs quite a bit for me to insure my little family of 3 actually.

If you want the cheapest rate possible and your wife has no policy of her own you will need to decline Pregnancy coverage.

HSA is the best bet the wife and I, I hope HSAs survive Obamacare.

There's no reason any insurance plan won't survive Obamacare except perhaps the least competitive options, who people just won't pick when exchanges provide more choice.

kaiser - Sadly their individual plans have skyrocketed since Obamacare.

I have kaiser also. Been pretty good rates and service. Oddly mine went down. They lowered it because my health was so good after some tests

Lets hope they don't have plans to raise it because of obummer

Why would they? Maybe your rates should increase because you have something causing irrationality? Obamacare is bringing rates down, not up.

I'll give you that, usually, yes, COBRA is quite expensive compared to private options...but, unless you know his former company's plan and plan cost, how can you say that?

You aren't very informed. Why spread it to OT?

Latest Obamacare delay angers critics and fans

"And if, for instance, a group benefit plan already has a cap in place for separately administered out-of-pocket drug benefits, then that plan's new maximum in 2014 for those benefits must not be in excess of $6,350 for individuals, and double that for families. That means affected people would be on the hook for potentially twice the amount of money they would otherwise have been next year because of the delay.

But if there is not already a cap in place for such separate benefits, then there will be no limit on the out-pocket costs for those benefits through 2014, because of the delay. That means that people needing, for example, cancer medications could find themselves facing tens of thousands of dollars in extra costs.

Because he's into the kool aide, heavily.

Can't get kaiser here. Glad ACA fixed the across state line competition thing.

Medical mutual of Ohio company...$325, 2 years ago...$492 now and they're dropping SC at years end. $10K deductible, fam of 3.

If you want to be an idiot that's your choice, but ignoring the numerous articles detailing how average cost level is going up I know that what I pay has almost doubled since the legislative abortion was passed.
