Someone is buying my GTX 770 Reference Card today for 200. Is it worth selling and getting a GTX 960? I actually have it listed for 170 on Cl,but this dude literally told me to hold it for a week and hes giving me 200 for it if I hold it for him and that day is today.

Don't pay money to downgrade to a 960. Go for the R9 290 for $250 after rebate.

That's a good 290 deal. Hmm.

Yeah, I can't understand how anyone can buy anything else around the $200 range right now unless they're

1) building a mini-ITX box that absolutely must have a small and low TDP card
2) if they're installing to an OEM system and can't go above 450W or so
-or-
3) they already have a card and are getting a second for SLI/CF

The 960 is about the same speed as a 760/660. It runs cooler and consumes less power, but you will need to spend a bit more if you want something that is as faster/faster than what you had.

Hmmmm never owned a amd card before how do they go against the GTX 970? I've seen comparison and benchmark results that the 970 surpasses the 290x in overall performance, but I've also heard good reviews about it and also bad about AMD cards.

This would be a down-grade as the 770 is usually equal to or faster than a 960.

Well, most of the bad things were said about the reference cards. Personally, an OC'd 290 will be running a 970 close in most cases, and for about $70-$80 less. Drivers are not an issue...

Personally, for $50 odd or so, you get a decent jump in performance and wouldn't have to change any components like PSU etc., so i don't see any hang-ups what so ever committing to it. I sincerely don't see resale value of 770 going up, and with that in mind, it's even more plain than before. Unless, you want to do business with a specific company in mind, which is entirely your call.

As someone who recently purchased one of those 290s on sale (I went with Sapphire, but day-to-day any of the Asus/MSI/Sapphire cards might be the best deal and are fine cards), I naturally think it's the best option in the $250 range. Just make sure the model you purchase fits in your case (might have been an issue for me if I hadn't already removed the hard drive cage of my R4) and you have the PSU to power it (not an issue if it's for the build in your sig).

I should note that if I had had a 770 I probably would not have been in the market for a graphics cards as it's still pretty recent and decent. Congrats on getting $200 for that.

But that $200. It sweetens the deal considerably, and makes it much more doable, than otherwise. And if for $50 or so you can get an upgrade, wouldn't you? I would pounce on it so fast...

I figured the price-point and bang-for-buck performance of the GTX 970 were just right. Figure on $350, but watch for sales. I feel almost fortunate that they didn't release the 960 until now, because I might have made a mistake.

The MSI GTX 970 "Gaming" 4G model has great reviews. For about $40 more, you can have the GTX 970 4G Gold LE version, which has a vented back-plate. These cards are so heavy and huge, I decided to pay for it.

Also, in my "investigations," some folks are irritated by a coil-whine that seems more common to the ASUS GTX 970 Strix. So I "shined on" the ASUS purchase and got the MSI. Ain't got no coil whine.

They're pushing it. The resellers are pushing it to kids on the street.

I can only say: "I'm hooked!" The AfterBurner software seems equal to or better than the ASUS Tweak.

I'm not an expert, but some may say that the gap between $250-$270 to $350-$390 is not good value, especially when both cards are separated by close to single digit percentage points.

Spend $40-60 extra and get an after-market R9 290 like the ASUS DirectCUII or Sapphire TriX. At 1080p, the performance is within 5-6% of a 970. 4GB of VRAM is a huge advantage for newer games over 2GB on the 960/770. In the Shadow of Mordor, a 290 is about 2X faster than a 960/770 at 1080p with AA:

Thats a great example........
of cherry picking.

you really dont have to do that. its clear enough when you look at the big picture

the 290(x) is powerful and a real upgrade for him across the board

Actually, I wouldnt say the 970 topples the 290x in performance. Generally, no. That really shouldnt matter anyways, since you were considering getting a gtx 960 of all things.

A gtx 960 would make a decent sub 200 part but its not the card you want. You already have a card more powerful than the gtx960.

If you have to upgrade and are on a budget, AMD has some very powerful cards that are priced really really well. Dont get just any 290(x) though, if you decided to go that route there are many people here that can help you pick the best 290 to get for the money.
