Sometimes I get the feeling that a lot of participants here are a little out of touch with what it's like to be lower middle class. Not exactly limousine liberals, but maybe BMW liberals. As a group, more affluent than average, and less likely to be a part of the wage stagnation that has afflicted a large swath of working class America. I won't say that the response was correct or that there is an abundance of suffering, but many of us remember that things were different once, when in this country hard work guaranteed a certain level of upward mobility. Now it results in treading water or worse for many. I'm not trying to justify anything in a speech or something an election result, but the stagnation isn't something made up.

That kind of thinking is troubling to me, because it was the same justification for dismantling the Voting Rights Act.And my comment re unions was complimentary. I don't know if they are "done," exactly, but in this day and age, with the kind of employee protection laws they were instrumental in helping enact, it's hard to know if they aren't an anachronism when it comes to government employees in particular.
