You are painting with a much broader brush than I would ever use. I don't know if this says something about your ideology, but it is suggestive.

He's pointing to a book, and you're calling it a painting while implying his style is suspect.

I think that says a lot about your ideology.

In my neighborhood people who call on foreign adversaries to hack a Political Party are called traitors.
What's your point?
The point was to elicit a reaction. All I did was point out that a very small group of individuals are acting like overgrown children, and the this wpuld be true regardless of their political affiliation. What is your point, exactly? Do you, as Ironwing seems to be doing, hold all Republicans to account for the allegation you make?

Understood apologies.

The funny part is that I'm not even a Republican. I might be, if they weren't infested with fundies and neocons.

Can anyone tell me where in the country is this hellscape that Trump sees?

Does he think he's only president of 1980s Detroit?

Sometimes I get the feeling that a lot of participants here are a little out of touch with what it's like to be lower middle class. Not exactly limousine liberals, but maybe BMW liberals. As a group, more affluent than average, and less likely to be a part of the wage stagnation that has afflicted a large swath of working class America. I won't say that the response was correct or that there is an abundance of suffering, but many of us remember that things were different once, when in this country hard work guaranteed a certain level of upward mobility. Now it results in treading water or worse for many. I'm not trying to justify anything in a speech or something an election result, but the stagnation isn't something made up.

There's a lot of people like that indeed. Many never missed a meal or earned a scar from where they grew up, but know all about it and IMO the chief reason Hillary lost. She just didn't seem to care about many people outside her circle but dissecting demographics and calculating in attitude. She just seemed too dismissive of people in need because they weren't the "right" people and could be taken for granted.

Didn't work out well.

Hopefully someone will learn.

You can't cite old times when hard work was rewarded unless you ardently support unions today.

Is that happening? Doesn't seem that way, does it?

I have family that worked the line in auto plants. I've seen exactly what has happened, and paid attention to why.

I am dead certain Trump was never the answer to those problems. And I understand quite well why so many were swayed to his siren song.

I have no interest in continuing to litigate the failures of the Clinton campaign. That can happen in another thread that I'm sure could be resurrected for that purpose.

Unions served their purpose and were drivers of change. I don't know if your view is really overly simplistic or you just want to leave out parts that don't fit the narrative you support, but a lot more has happened to produce the stagnation effect than just declining union membership. I'm sure you know that, and no, you can't invalidate the point I was trying to make just by imputing certain beliefs to me.

What point? That you chose to paint people as out of touch when you really know nothing about them? My wages have not kept up with inflation and I only gain ground through ever more overtime. That takes a toll on family life.

Lol I don't think you know what a hypocrite is. For one, trump literally lives in a tower and the interior is gold.

Second its quite possible to be a failure at business and still live in a golden tower. In fact a lot of "regular" citizens do not like the fact that CEO's receive large payouts even when the company, under their stewardship, fails. The guy was born with a golden spoon in his mouth, it's very possible for him to be a failure and out of touch with the regular man.

But you aren't too smart so I'm probably won't my time trying to explain it you.

Btw, did you enjoy your mortgage increase today?

I've been told that painting analogies are no good. I'm sure kage69 will be along shortly to set you straight. When I made that sweeping generalization about forum participants (and nobody ever stereotypes groups like that here, right?) I was just testing an idea, not making a wholehearted attempt to insult anyone. Anyway, if I was trying to insult, I would have said Porsche liberals. The point, which you seem rather determined to miss, is that there has been real wage stagnation in the US middle class over the last generation. Trump was able to tap into the frustration associated with that while Hillary played it down.

Looks like you do believe unions are done. So that's an interesting narrative you've got.

Yeah... so I have to wonder if you're not the one out of touch with real working class Americans.

But I apparently missed your point. Can you elaborate on it?

Greedy, rich bastard and business failure dumbass are clearly not mutually exclusive.
Not saying this as a counter to you, but in conjunction, anyone who thinks those traits are incompatible has completely swallowed the myth that rich people are inherently clever and ipso facto they earned their wealth.

Ignoring the most obvious counterpoint: inheritance.

It's sad, in a way, how idealistic and naive some people try to be when reality is almost literally beating them over the head.

Oh, c'mon. There's not really much to what I said.

The stagnation is real. While there are some questions about exactly what it reveals and the accuracy of its data interpretation, Branko Milanovic's "Elephant Curve" makes a pretty good case for the effects of globalization on the middle class.

And my comment re unions was complimentary. I don't know if they are "done," exactly, but in this day and age, with the kind of employee protection laws they were instrumental in helping enact, it's hard to know if they aren't an anachronism when it comes to government employees in particular.

Unions are great unless it's police unions protecting bad apples. The fact of the matter is unions protect poor performers as well. Not to mention more than a few unions went on strike against company resulting in them going bankrupt and the workers losing their jobs. It happened in my hometown and the company was by far the biggest company, many generations of families worked for the company. All the retirees lost their pensions due the bankrupcy as well.

That kind of thinking is troubling to me, because it was the same justification for dismantling the Voting Rights Act.
