Went to a free preview last night and, well, it's Will Ferrell, so there is not a tonne to say about plot or anything. It does not follow the exact formula of the rest of his sports satire movies, but it's not far off the mark. It was written by the guy that did Old School which upped my expectations just a little because I actually enjoyed that movie, but Semi-pro is nowhere near as good as Old School.

Will Arnett provided the only laugh out loud moment for me, but the rest of the theatre appeared to be in stitches for most of it.

So, all in all, I'd say don't waste your money and rent it on DVD so you can watch it drunk or stoned or something; probably much funnier in an altered state.

5.3/10

KT

PS: Seeing Woody in a comedy like this makes me want to go watch Kingpin for the 50th time: "It's a small world when you've got unbelievable tits Roy."

I give it a 0/10 and I don't even have to go watch it.

I mean it's got Will Ferrell in it.

I liked Old School, Anchorman, and Stranger Than Fiction so I cannot agree with your blanket zero rating.

I can certainly agree with it.

I rate Will Ferrell as 0/10.

He was never funny in SNL either.

I would hope you agree with it, since you are the one that originally stated it. Just for shits and giggles, what comedies do you like?

Blasphemy! The Jeopardy skits were pure genius. Granted, Ferrell played the straight man in those bits but he was still funny in that role as well.

Agreed

Alex Trebek: Mr. Connery, go ahead.

Sean Connery: The day is mine! I'll take Famous Titties for 400.

Alex Trebek: Titles, Famous Titles.

Sean Connery: Damn!

Alex Trebek: And the answer is: This movie title is taken from the name of the book "Gone With The Wind." Mr. Sean Connery.

Sean Connery: Dolly Parton!

Alex Trebek: Titles, Mr. Connery. Not titties.

Sean Connery: Not a fan of the ladies, are you Trebek?

Okay....so he was good in those - I forgot he was in them.

And for KT as for what comedies I like....

The most recent decent one I've seen is Bruce Almighty, and I normally don't really like Jim Carrey much, but it wasn't bad.

Monty Python stuff - Flying Circus sketches mostly
Older stuff - Princess Bride, etc.

I have not been too impressed with newer comedies...and I can't even think of many.

Well I can't argue with you there.

Princess Bride is a classic.

Man I loved that skit, my old roommate and I will sometimes randomly go into that skit word for word and roll on the floor laughing. Usually when drunk, but still funny.

so let's get this straight, the rest of the theatre was cracking up the whole time yet you only found one part funny so they all must be wrong?

Pretty sure I didn't say they were wrong, I only offered my opinion on the movie and the fact that it only offered one laugh out loud moment for me. I chuckled in spots and had a smile on my face for a good chunk of it, but for some reason I did not laugh as much as most of the other people there. /shrug

I actually own Elf. It's decent enough, but I mainly own it because there is a dearth of even semi-decent Christmas movies out there; the majority of them are crap.

While you didn't say they were wrong, you also didn't acknowledge that in your conclusion.

More than likely the majority of those there were in an altered state, hence the increased hilarity for them. But of course I could just be making a sweeping generalization based upon what I observed.

YACWFM-Yet another crappy Will Ferrell movie...

Jesus, what can this guy suck at next? How about a lame Bond parody? We could call it 'The Spy Who Snored Me'.
