Why should Obama follow military etiquette and return a salute?

Just because he is commander in chief?

You expect Obama to follow etiquette like every other president has done?

What are you? A racist?

LOL

You know that, as a civilian, the Commander in Chief is not required to return the salute right? So there is no etiquette to follow. As for "Every other President has done" well, it started with Reagan so..... Rage on.

OP have you ever served?

Oh and posting in another unhinged John Conner thread.

Don't see what service or lack thereof has anything to do with it. I served and it doesn't bother me, but I can understand why someone else might be annoyed.

If I were the POTUS advisor I'd have him invite the Marines in question to join him for a cup of coffee at the White House. "Apologizing" that way when he really doesn't have to will make for good PR and would be a great tribute to the Marines.

Better to have return the salute rather than not doing so. When I was in the Navy it wasn't uncommon to receive a halfassed return salutes from a senior officer. Admirals were the worst.

To the OP, save your outrage for something worthwhile.
This, exactly.

I wouldn't even acknowledge this "controversy." It's manufactured outrage and simply makes people, like the OP, look like unreasonable and insane loons.

There are so many things that people might have legitimate issues with the President and his policies, but then choosing to pick this to bitch about? It's insane.

Well you see that's the problem. The Tea Party has made being an insane and unreasonable loon an acceptable thing for the far right.

It's funny, after watching Ken Burns' documentary, The Roosevelts, it seems that it has always been somewhat acceptable to be a blowhard and make a mountain out of ant hills when 'your guy' isn't in charge.

Eg: when Republicans accused FDR of using taxpayer money to use a destroyer to pick up his dog which was left behind (which was entirely untrue, and FDR then subsequently mocked them in a campaign speech): http://www.adn.com/article/20140911/when-president-came-dinner-fdr-alaska

Well apparently we must have elected some pretty big folks considering that 39 of 44 presidents (89%) didn't follow your "etiquette".

Just be honest with yourself, you needed something new to feel outraged about.

There are so many good reasons to be mad at Obama right now. Why waste your time with something small like this? It's not like the guy is running for reelection right now.

A person not in the military, with no former military service, doesn't properly following guidelines of military customs and courtesies? I am shocked and appalled! I bet the Koch brothers are behind this somehow! They planted those marines!

You live in the right wing media bubble so I'm sure you think that's true. That's a testament to how far in a bubble you are and how distorted your view is.

The vast majority of people in the military don't give a shit about any of this. They just want to go to work, get paid, and not get killed or sent on some pointless deployment. The quality of a president's salute? Who gives a shit.

Actually a ton of military people are frothing at the mouth over it. Every military social media group that I follow has posted this story and the responses have been very negative.

I think it's funny coming from the same people who probably get out of their car at the commissary and survey the area in order to plan a salute free route to the front door (like me.)

The entire idea of the president saluting troops like this was started by Ronald Reagan because, as a Hollywood actor, he knew what would make for great photos.

I don't really care for it, and I care for it even less when the president has no prior military experience. To me, a president saluting the troops is just a couple steps away from having a president who wears a military dress uniform and rules accordingly (Asad, Gaddafi, Musharaff, Chan-ocha, etc.)

Good thing about America is if you are waiting for something to froth at the mouth over, there are plenty of media folks who are just waiting to put something in front of your face.

From my experience with military social media I'm guessing there's an extremely strong selection bias in those groups. I don't remember any similar outrage over Bush's dog-salute, either. (I for one had to hide a number from my facebook feed after awhile due to the incessant anti-Obama conspiracy theorizing that took place)

I imagine people use issues like this as a proxy for other things. If you already think Obama is an America hating communist this probably serves as further proof.

President Bush then put the dog down, went back and properly returned the salute. True story.

Pretty sure the event you're referring to happened in 2001. That picture is from 2006 and I'm not aware of any evidence of him coming back and properly saluting afterwards.
