This socket 754 Sempron runs at 1.8GHz and performs very closely to the Athlon 64 2800+ (see Doom 3 performance chart), and it's cheaper by more than 25%.

Also, if it's anything like the other Athlon 64's, it should probably overclock to around 2.4 GHz without problems.

Call now, operators are standing by.....

Is that an OEM processor? I'm guessing it might be, based on the 60 day warrenty.

Newegg has the OEM one with free shipping for $100 as well.

Good deal, but keep in mind that the 3100+ can not run 64-bit software.

Hi guys,

Maybe it's just me, but why not a mobile XP 2600+ for about $100? It is Socket A so you don't have to buy a new mobo (you probably already have an Nforce2 board, or pick-up one for cheap), and when you overclock it a little, it kicks some serious butt! I am running mine at 2.4gig (200 x 12) with 1.65Vcore. Just my 2 cents.

Can you overclock semprons as much as the mobiles?

with A64 price cut and coming and with 90nm on Sempron 3000+, 3100+, 3200+ next month, we are going to see yet another push to Socket 754. 3000+ 90nm should be very good value OC CPU.

I recently received my Sempron from Monarch this week as well. I posted details in this thread as the author.

yes, it's just you, because Athlon XP would have to run a whole lot faster than the A64 based Sempron to have equal performance, and even if you overclock both, the difference in clock speed will not be more than about 200 MHz, so the Sempron will still have a very siginificant performance advantage.
Of course, if you go for a cheaper Athlon XP, and add a cheap mobo, than you can begin to approach the value level of this deal, but I believe there are quite a few decent and reasonably priced 754 mobos.

No, i'm not so sure it's just me. I did a quick research, and yes, the 3100 sempron has the intergrated memory controler that enhances the chip's performance. Therefore, on the benchmarkings of memory intensive applications/tests, the 3100 sempron does quite well. However, on other benchmarking tests, it leads xp2600+ by only a small margin, and is similarly tested in certain benchmarks with P4 2.4. If you compare xp2600+ or P4 2.4 with my overclocked mobile..., well there would be no comparison. In addition, although the articles did say that the decreased cache is not a real big factor, the 3100 sempron still only has half the L2 cache of a mobile xp. Therefore, your claim of "very significant performance advantage" is a bit of an over-statement.

I hope you don't get all bent out of shape over this. I've seen just too many threads where people make personal attacks and threads get crapped for differences in opinions. I am not trying to thread-crap or anything. I am merely offering an alternative to those who are not aware. It is a fantastic altermative as almost all overclocked mobile xp2600s can get 2.5gigs on AIR. That's 500Mhz overclock! That's 25% overclock over its original 2.0gig speed. I run 200x12.5 at 1.725Vcore Prime95 stable. Nonetheless, 3100 sempron seems to be a nice chip as well. They say it, too, overclocks very well. Not sure how much though. Anyway, thanks to you and to this thread, I learned a lot about 3100 Sempron tonight.

I know about the value proposition of Athlon XP because I own a Barton 2500+ which I overclock to 11x210 = 2310 MHz at 1.8Vcore running on air (slk-900a w/80mm fan) 100% stable. I only paid $73 for the CPU and about $60 for mobo (AN35N Ultra) and getting very good performance in gaming, so I agree Athlon XP is a great value and good basis for a budget gaming rig. But base on gaming benchmarks I'm looking at, which compare Athlon XP 3200+ (@2.2GHz) to Sempron 3100+ (@1.8GHz), I would assume that you would have to reach at least 2.5GHz with an Athlon XP just to equalize with a Sempron 3100+ at stock speed. And if you overclock the sempron by 20%, which is conservative, that Athlon XP will be left behind. The difference in price, including mobo, is less than $50, and may be closer to $25.

I have a very early Sempron. It hits 2.5ghz with 1.6v. It will probably do 2.6ghz, but I'm waiting for my DFI motherboard to get here to do some additional testing.

I can't see recommending a Mobile Barton to anyone over this processor... it's a ton faster. The only case where the Mobile would be a justified upgrade would be if the user already had an AXP board - if you're looking for a new budget system, though, the Sempron rocks. Add in the MSI K8N Neo or the Chaintech VNF3-250 and you've got an excellent budget overclocking combo for less than $200.

I would have thought the AXP was faster because of the higher cache, but at oupost I saw a sempron with like 638kb cahce!

It looks like 2cpu has a very nice Hot Deals forum. I have booked marked it and will have to start watching it more closely.

thanks ReMeDy{WcS}

Just note that to overclock the sempron, you have to overclock the fsb, so you need fast memory if you want to keep the memory running synchronously with the FSB, which is the most optimal. So the memory would need to reach about 2x250= DDR500. But for mobile barton, you can just keep the memory at whatever you like, and change the multiplier. So you could use older and/or cheaper memory.

with the sempron 3100 and athlon 64's you do not need to keep the memory running synchronously it only provides a small improvement because of the already optimized integrated memory controller. Running the memory asynch at ddr400 would still destroy the memory bandwith of an axp mobile.running an axp mobile at a low fsb with a high multiplier would impact its performance much more.

Indeed. Asynchronous memory on the A64 makes very little performance difference, and it makes overclocking easier.
