Sempron vs XP

Ok, I'm planning on building a new computer (Socket A) within the next month... and was planning on using an Athlon XP 2800+.

My question is, will the new Sempron, with the same speed rating, out preform the XP? If it's worth waiting I could build the new box and keep using my slow Tbird 1.3 until they come out. I'm just not sure, considering the cut in L2 if the improved core would make up the difference.

based on the increased power requirements I don't think I'd go with a Sempron over a Mobile Barton. I think the Barton-M and it's ability to consistantly reach 2.4ghz-2.6ghz on air is the way to go if building a sktA rig.

Well I was planning on the regular Barton... plus i *gasp* don't overclock

Well, the skt 754 model seems to offer a better upgrade path but it sounds like that isn't an issue for you. In that case I'd council you wait and see what the Sempron benchies on sktA look like, and stick with that T-bird till you see what shakes out.

the 2800+ sempron is in fact cheaper then the barton 2800+ now, so i really dont have a clue on its price to performance.

Ok, so this chip is eing release for both Socket-A and S754. Obviously the S-A chip will not have an on-die memory controller and the S754 chip will. Does this mean the S-A Sempron is just a rebagged AXP, or is it a true K8 with the memory controller moved off-die?
