Yep, dems just extended the Patriot Act liberals love to hate.

The extension passed Wednesday night by voice vote with no debate. The bill goes to the House, but with key sections of the law ready to expire Sunday, there's little chance that changes will be made. Expiration of key anti-terrorism tools, even for a short time, would seriously hamper law enforcement.

I was incredibly disappointed to see this last night. One more reason I stopped associating myself with the Democrats long ago.

Just part and parcel of Repubs' recalcitrance and obstinacy. Dems were presented with an "all or nothing deal" by 41 Repub Senators, who are doing their very best to preserve the Bush Legacy... while attempting to paint Dems as "Soft on Terrar!"

It's not Dems who should be disappointed, but rather Repubs, by the ongoing fearmongering from their leadership...

I have never understood why one has a right to privacy when accessing a Public Library paid for by public money. If I have to pay for your access to porn and bomb-making why can't I share in it?

Congress as whole is a disappointment. The Republicans are the party of "No" and the Democrats who hold majorities in both houses are utterly spineless when they need to push forward on an issue unless they can muster a super-majority.

Half the country pays no income tax. Clearly you're paying their way too and they should have no privacy.

Yes - but have you seen those people? They are more than welcome to their privacy.

More seriously, those people (assuming they work) do pay payroll taxes into lock boxes which are cheerfully robbed to pay for other things. So it's not completely true they don't pay their way. Point taken, but I still think law enforcement should have free access to public library records at will. If you're going to attack the government, at least invest in your own computer and Internet connection.

Bwuhahaha.

The bill that passed was the one the Senate Dems (i.e., Reid) wanted passed.

The Repubs are now the ones calling the shots and presenting the Dems with the choices? For heaven's sake man, Reid runs the senate. Nothing gets voted on unless he wants it voted on. He didn't seem to have any problem unilaterally deciding to yank the much bigger and bi-partisan jobs bill a few days ago.

Look, if he wanted Reid could have only let the bill with extra precautions come to a vote. He's the one "presents" choices, not the Repubs.

If Reid had done that we'd be hearing the Repubs say "our choice was the extention with precautions, or no extention at all. So although we believe these precautions will hamper our fight against terrorism we had to vote for it.".

Jeebus, you apologists sound like you're still the minority party. "Whaaa! The Repubs did it!"

I think you're getting 'played', or else you're such a committed partisan you'll try to explain away and everything.

BTW: This didn't need to be 'last minute'. Reid controls the Senate schedule, he made it 'last minute' for a reason.

This whole "party of NO' crap is so contrived and bogus.

It's used:

1. When the Dem leadership doesn't want to do what their far left constituents want, it's a convenient excuse - blame it on the Repubs.

And

2. When they have no intention of compromising and wanna ram it through, just excuse it by claiming Repubs were gonna say 'no' anyway.

It's a charade people.

I don't think you actually read the article, Fern.

Part of Senatorial Repubs' strategy is to deny Dems anything they can claim as a victory. This episode is just another instance.

What part of this do you fail to comprehend-

"The proposed protections were cast aside when Senate Democrats lacked the necessary 60-vote supermajority to pass them."

Seems pretty straightforward... It clearly wasn't the bill Dems wanted, at all, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself that it was...

Isn't it odd how those most informed about Republican strategy are the looniest, farthest left crazies one could find? Not that you bear any resemblance to that description of course, I'm just saying . . .

Anyway, it's not like the Dems had a year in which they could pass any crazy little thing their flinty hearts desired. Which is good, 'cause otherwise the Democrats would bear 100% of the blame. Yup, sure is good that didn't happen.

The House voted 315 to 97 to extend the USA Patriot Act, sending the bill to President Barack Obama. Without the bill, the provisions would expire Sunday.

Yeah, they are so against it, even the House voted to extend it. Give me a break.
