“Chuck Schumer is the majority leader and he should be treated like majority leader. We can get shit done around here and we ought to be focused on getting stuff done,” said Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.). “If we don’t, the inmates are going to be running this ship.”

The filibuster, DACA, SCOTUS appointments, etc...

Since they have the tie-breaker vote should they say "Our way or the highway?"

Reach across, be willing to adapt and cater to other points of view for consideration.

If they don't play nice and aren't willing to be reasonable, then hammer.

Don't piss off. Don't be too partisan. It's in your best interest - you're 2 years away from losing the majority and in partisan gridlock.

If you make Americans feel happy, it will be reflected in the voting outcome.

Example: If you spend more of your first 100 days in office talking about illegal immigration as-if it's a priority during a pandemic, American voters will reflect their disapproval in 2 years.

The filibuster protects the GOP disproportionately since there is virtually nothing other than tax cuts that 50 of them can agree on.

Time to throw it overboard.

I'm trying to think of something Mitch could dangle to Schumer in hopes that Chuck will capitulate. Coming up with nuthin so far though...

Mitch is trying to split the Ds over the filibuster but doing so over the power sharing agreement and withholding the committee chairs just seems to be uniting them in getting pissed off at him.

Either way the legislative filibuster seems not long for this world one way or the other, at least in present form.

Dems have some leeway before going after the filibuster. I believe there are three reconciliation bills available over the next several months that could have Dem initiatives added to with a simple majority.

They also have the ability to force congress to adjourn and make recess appointments if the senate refuses to approve cabinet posts.

Plus many of the judge positions now cannot be filibustered.

If it was me, try a “simple” bipartisan approach to pandemic stimulus. If that fails due to irrational obstruction pass it via reconciliation and try to bully the more conservative Dems to support removing the filibuster.

McConnell is picking the fight now though. I don't really agree with his apparent logic that conservative Ds will get angry with Schumer over not capitulating instead of him and making what he doesn't want come to pass much sooner.

If they let McConnell continue as de facto majority leader they will definitely lose the house and senate in two years, as it will be impossible to convince dem voters to turn out in the numbers they need. What would be the point?

The only real option is to use this as an opportunity to get rid of the filibuster. Unfortunately, Schumer will have to do something to convince Manchin to support it (or way less likely a blue or purple state republican).

Like Bernie said
Let the republicans contribute.
But, if they dont want to enact any meaningful legislation to the benefit of the 99%, then the cannibal corpse song "Hammer Smashed Face" should be played in every senate session.

try working with them for a couple months. max. after that the hammer. there isn't much time until the next election.

i was talking to someone yesterday and saying i hope Biden doesn't make the same mistake Obama did and reach out to often to the unreachable. She said she was about halfway into Obama's latest book and he was getting into how reaching out to work so much with the other side just didn't work with them.

What does it matter. Joe will likely sit down and be willing to negotiate with McConnell anyway (at least in the beginning). If the R's show some flexibility, then take it. If not, use every rule in the book to get stuff passed. Certain Rs are going bitch and yell and scream for the sake of their 'base' no matter what - if enough Rs (60) vote yes on the bill, then it's a win.

Absolutely shouldn't give into this demand. If there is no threat of ending the filibuster it will be used to stop literally everything from passing. Just like Obama after Kennedy died.

I don't really want the filibuster to completely go away, but it either needs to be changed back to you have to get up there and yak non-stop or there should be a limit on how often it can be used.

Then again, not like Mitch even respects the filibuster, when it was his turn he just called everything he wanted a reconciliation bill.

You can bet that if the filibuster ever stood in McConnell's way, it would have been killed. We should stop treating Republicans like they are serious people that deserve serious consideration - they've shown themselves to be clowns that care only for themselves.

I say go with something any reasonable person can get behind, like a national covid strategy of both distribution and economic support. If they fight, give in a little and then bring the bill up for a vote. If they get zero Republican support or not enough to pass it then...
