Your complaining about government officials doing their job? It's their job to look after your welfare. Let them debate this and reach their own conclusion, hopefully with your input. Let's face it, games are become very violent and they are just doing what people ask of them.

Disturbing.... wow.

That's not how a constitutional republic operates. Officials are not all powerful, they are given certain limits within which they must work. Banning media is not one of their granted abilities and (unfortunately) an AO rating is a ban for all real purposes. The console companies have every right to determine what games they want and don't want on their consoles, and through their own rating system they "want" Manhunt 2 on their systems.

+1 on changing the way ratings work and for consoles utilizing the AO rating.

Issue #1: Banning media
[/sarcasm on]
But, but, but, I was taught in Public School that it was Government's job to legislate morality. No drinking. No drugs. No gambling (except through Government required investment and insurance scams^H^H^H^H^Hprograms). No voilence in media.
[/sarcasm off]

Issue #2: console companies have every right to determine what games they want and don't want on their consoles!?!?!
No, no, no, no, no. That is just the result of a bought-and-paid-for judicial decision to allow monopolies on hardware consoles cartidge interfaces. Cartidges are no longer used, but the courts allow the monopolies to continue. Should TV manufacturer be allowed to determine that DVDs you display on them. Should Bill Gates be allowed to determine that only the Microsoft verision of Solartire be allowed to run on your PC (as in no Hoyle, no Bicycle, etc). I hope you come to understand how rediculous your statement was.

You can't run a game on the Wii without including on the disc software to which Nintendo owns the copyright. I believe the same applies to the Xbox 360, and I would be surprised if the same did not apply to the PS3. The same does not apply to PCs.

I hope you learn to spell ridiculous.

This whole thing sucks. Hilary has definitely lost my vote. I hate censorship which I cannot control. I'm all about considering world issues and the future, but like all greedy Americans I consider my daily life first. Adding lots of pressure for censorship will make my life less happy. My decision when choosing not to vote for her is that simple.

The disadvantage is that a great many stores refuse to even sell games with with Adult Only rating. All game developers recognize this as a big problem for sales which is why you will barely ever see an Adult Only game on the shelves. They purposely nerf violence, sexual content, and language a lot if that is what it takes to bring it down to a Mature rating. I love great detail in my video games which often means I love heavy violence and all that jazz. Many like me will often find games like that more fun. Violence drives a lot of sales for certain categories of games.

So, basically if a more strict rating system comes out then we will have this:

Less violent games = Less sales = Less quality = Less fun

She can eat a D.

It's not censorship it's a maturity rating and right or wrong it's not that big of a deal in the big picture. As has already been said, if your decision to vote for/against someone is based video game maturity ratings then you should probably stay home on election day.

While the rating system is not censorship, we sure to not need to empower the bozos in DC, or this game will be censored just like some music and games have already been in the USA and many more have been censored in other "democracy" countries. This country already has more communistic social programs and restriction laws in place than the USSR *ever* did, so we definitly do not need any more.

Movie ratings: okay. Music ratings: okay. Game ratings: okay. Censoring games at the developer level: worse than bad.

Game developers make games to make money. If a game is extremely violent and will sell they will make it. If it's going to be limited in sales because of limited availability in locations or age groups they'll modify the content so it does sell. It's no different than movies and music.

Anyway, the point of my reply is there are FAR more important issues at hand in this election than game ratings.

You are right about there being more important issues in some sense and I never stated that I will solely base my decision on her viewpoint on this one subject. To me, the most important factors will be what effects me the most in my daily life and decisions which effect video games and other media are one of those things which will effect me daily. While they may not seem as important world wide, it is important to me.

Mostly though, I feel that she is just too much of an extremist in general and pushes for radical change too much too fast. She is not a patient person which is a bad thing in my opinion. The best changes in this country usually happen gradually along with an exception from time to time. Hilary supports a lot of things that I support. I will give her that. The censorship stuff (or whatever you want to call it) and her general approach to problems is where her and I differ. I don't believe she is very good at strategically looking at the future when it comes to many of her ideas which I feel has a lot to do with her patience. The rest of it comes down to her being more conservative than me.

I don't see the need to go into further detail than that. She won't be getting my vote.

Actually, not true. A game where one can play a year 2000 version of George Washington and charge into the white house and the congressional offices is already censored. If developed with the same high production standards, it would sell well. Very well. Try to sell it (or even release it for free), and the SS will knock down your door, confiscate all your equipment, and imprision you faster than you can say "viva la resistance!"

Single player games killing Nazis/Terrorists: okay (if you don't use chainsaws

Multiplayer game where someone plays the Terrorists, killing Americans: nope, DC wants those censored. DC thinks that the industry is training future terrorists (read: year 2007 muslins as well as year 2012 versions of George Washington's freedom fighters)

Actually, NOT! This stems from the same root issue, the most important issue, of eliminating the liberties guaranteed by the constitution.

Different application, same issue.

If that's how you view her then IMO those (bolded) are very valid reasons to not vote for her. FWIW, I'm not campaigning for her (this isn't P&N ) and I don't know who I will vote for yet.

Considering what's happened to the liberties guaranteed by the constitution over the past 8 years while under the watch of the 'freedom loving conservatives'... Ah, nevermind. This thread belongs in P&N after all.

There's nothing stopping from developers outside the US from creating such a game if they wanted to. Plus, if a game involving terrorists attacking Americans was created and sold here do you really think would sell well? My guess is no. In fact, I'd guess any developer or studio who announced a game like that would get a citizen imposed nationwide boycott very fast.

If it was fun and ridiculous then I would totally play it. Something along the lines of crossing Earthworm Jim with some of the latest and greatest FPS technology but make it in 3rd person would be great hehe. For the record, I don't hate America.

Seriously though, there is a big difference between making something outside the US and buying it outside of the borders to play in the US. Even with the internet that can be annoying and expensive. That's the issue there.

The way I see it the FPS category is already full of games of various themes and styles so other than the 'draw' of it being against Americans I don't see the point. I still think any game like that would get instant negative bad press and the backlash would be swift and severe. Anyone involved would get boycotted.

There doesn't need to be a point as long as it's funny even if in a kind of sick anti-patriotic way hehe. And ya, of course it will get bad press.
