Sending messages across LANs

How do I send messages across LANs ala Winpopup in Windows 2000 Professional?

I don't think Win2k has winpopup. You can send messages through net send though. It pops up a window to the person you are sending the message to. Open a command window and the format of the message is:


NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message

Example: net send jrw hello

jrw is username, hello is message

I remember back in the computer lab at UT Business school the MIS majors had MUCH FUN using NET SEND in the lab to freak out unsuspecting Marketing and Finance majors. "WARNING: Your computer has detected a virus! System shut down will proceed. You may lose ALL of your work!"

Also fun to send at good-looking girls. "Wow, you hands feel very soft and supple. You know, computers have needs, too!"

If you want, create a batch file with that command and run it about 100 times, does bad things to bandwidth.....I told a guy his hard drive was dirty and needed to be washed with soap and water....

Yes I suppose so. I sent a message to my housemate who is on Win9x

Why did Ms get rid of Winpopup in Win2k I wonder

If you can send a message from 2000 to Win9x, can you do it vice versa?? Someone said to bring up the command window, but I'm not familiar with that. Haven't had a chance to ever use 2000 yet.

I suppose you could.

To bring up the command window, in Windows 9x, Start -> Programs -> MS-DOS Prompt.

It's hidden in Windows ME.

WIN98SE tells me that net send isn't a valid command. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm not sure if Net is valid command in Win9x, this is the first time I've seen it and it is under Win2k.

Let's say I want to say Hello to a computer whose name is Joe.

NET SEND JOE hello!

Yeah, researched it a little bit. NET SEND only works on NT boxes. The equivilant for Win9x is the WinPopup, but of course that's dependant on everybody actually having it open, unlike the NET SEND command in NT, which ALWAYS works. Ahh well, guess I'll have to figure out something else to freak out my dormmates.

I've used net send at work with domains setup, but at home I just have a few boxes on a peer to peer, with no domain to put in does anyone know how to send them?

So Net Send works across Windows platforms, but the command itself is only available on NT or 2000 boxes. Use Winpopup for Win9x machines.
