Sennheiser HD 439 phones 80$ Best Buy

My pair were purchased in store in Brookfield, WI. But this price shows as 80$ with free shipping to either home or store I believe online as well.

These are awesome headphones, my first pair of entry level audiophile quality headphones. I will never again use a gaming headset!


I was seriously impressed at what I have been missing in the music I was listening to previously.

Amazons cheapest price right now is 130 or so, so FYI 80$ is a steal for these and probably wont last.

The HD429 is a much better deal at $50:

Measurements should they have a nearly identical frequency response, with the HD429 having arguably a smoother, flatter response. The pads on the HD429 produce better bass with less THD. The pads on the HD429 also allow for a better seal.

The HD429s are great at $50. I'm not sure I'd really consider the HD439 at $80.

They do sound quite good, especially for the money. The treble is not as rolled off as the measurements would have you believe. They're smooth and easy to listen to without having overpowering bass.

I have both, plus many other high and low end sennheisers, I can say that the 439's are on a whole other level than the 429's. 439's are the first senns that get rid of the famous veil low end sennheisers have that muffles the sound, so the clarity of the 439s is substantially better than 429's, and better than anything at that price, assuming you have a decent sound card, or a decent mp3 player (no ipod crap). On top of that, the 429s aren't as comfortable, but the 439's are almost as comfortable as my 598s.

The 429s are good for the price, but keep in mind the 439s used to be $130 and everyone at headfi would agree it was worth it including me. So $80 is an absolute steal for those entry level audiophile cans

Yup, true that on the 29 vs 39... Seal isn't everything
Me and everyone else agrees the 39 is the better buy. I tried the 29's and I was not very impressed at all.

I'll take nearly identical measurements from a very reputable source over what folks at Head-Fi say. Having spent several years over there myself (and still do), 95% of the people on there have no clue what they're talking about.

The refurb price on the HD429 is a no-brainer.

The deal being discussed in this thread is the 439. This is your third post advocating the 429.

I let this go twice. Now you need to stop.

I triwd them both on. The other ones felt like shit.
And you can factor in the two different cable sizes being a plus for people with pcs as well.
Part of me wonders why you even posted this reply to.my thread.. rsepcially after aomeone rose commented that indeed, 80$ from 130 certainly is a hot deal.

Sorry I know this thread is supposed to be about the 439's so this post is really "why I should have bought the 439's over the 429's."

Unfortunately I bought the 429's after buying into the hype... should have stayed away but they were $28 on Amazon and I couldn't pass that up...

The cord is crap, its about as thin as your average $10 pair of headphones... yet it is 10' long which is a ridiculous length if you plan on using these with your smartphone which is what I imagine most people want.

To use with smartphone you have to do something with the extra length and so you end up with a ball of cable somewhere along the way between your phone and your headphone. Edit- I just realized you can wrap the extra cord around the headband just above the earmuff to get rid of the extra cable but this is a clunky solution

I should have spent the extra and get the 4' cord which is interchangable with a 10' cord on the 439's from what I've read... much more practical and usable in various scenarios...
such as I found that they could be useful for listening to the tv with the long cord but it would be nice to switch to a 4' cord for use with my phone.

i prefer hd 598's because they are nicer looking and you can power it with an mp3 player and take it places, but for small studio work an hd 600/650 is fine

I absolutely love sennheiser's swap cable systems in their headphones. I can't speak for other brands because I've only had senn's that have that feature. I have replaced my cable like 2 times now on my 9 year old HD212 pros because eventually they go bad with heavy usage. I've always had that problem with every pair of headphones I've ever had. It's great being able to buy a new cable for $12 from B&H photo instead of a brand new pair of $60 headphones.

Went to link in first post and printed out info. Took to my local BB, where they were not on display, and they pulled a set from the back. Purchased for the $80. price day before yesterday. Enjoy the swappable cables, will see how the sound improves after burning them in.

Got mine today and am very disappointed in them. They have a boomy bass emphasis that makes listening to classical music an unpleasant experience. I will try to find a portable CD player for flights that has an equalizer to allow bass de-emphasis. They fit nicely and cover my ears -- but the boomy equalization is intolerable.

Note added:
My HiFi has five McIntosh components with which I can adjust the output to the HD 439's so they are tolerable -- but I can't fly with a McIntosh on my lap. Does anyone here know of a small CD player suitable for use on an airplane that has an abolity to do a bass de-emphasis

Good to hear about the bad bass. I took mine back to BB the other day. Found out I already had a pair of 448s. The 439s were supposed to be better with the bass, but not from what you just said.

IMHO, for listening to classical music on flights, IEMs are better than closed headphones. You can use charts on headphone.com to evaluate frequency response and isolation. For example, the Etymotic HF5 are more linear and have great isolation. YMMV on comfort and fit.
