woah. and yes, these are rated one of the top headphones one can get in the sub 100 dollar range. good stuff. as stated in many a thread in head-fi.org headphone.com. these are entry level audiophile quality. the next step involves spending lots of money

great for pc use. cord is very long and detachable from both ends. also great for movie watching when one can't wake the neighbors

How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD580 / HD600 series? How about the Sennheiser PC150 gaming phones with boom mic? Grado SR60?

Less refined version of the above or do they have a totally different character?

Also, are the enthusiastic recommendations for gaming headphones or music and dvd playback?

A review from Headfi.com told me that these are equivalent to the Grado SR60. These are supposedly more exact, giving a harder sound but more clarity. The Grado SR60 are supposed to offer a warmer sound that's friendly to pop and bass heavier music.

HD497 are supposed to be more for classical/jazz. etc. For $37 total, this is a killer deal. I'm picking one up.

btw... THe review from Headfi also said these sound terrible out of the box, and a burn in is required.

I think these will definitely sound better than the pc150.

yea they are direct competition for sr60's. they are ussually about 60 dollars.

not much compares to hd600s

but for 1/8 the price, who cares

Does anybody know how the size of these earpieces compares to the earpieces of the HP 250? My HD250 is fine for me.

I think the people that have problems have bigger than average ears.

I don't know if my ears are average size or bigger than average but my HD-497s fit just fine. For these headphones to sit on top of your ears you'd have to have some pretty damn big ears.

its sorta half circum aural... so it mostly is around your ear, but most of the clamp is on the part in front of the ear and its angled away from the head at the back so it doesn't matter so much. the bottom of my lobe touches the pad. circumaural are much larger..those are like cupping bowls around your ears, touching only your skull

It was five tickets actually. Those combined totalled over $2500. And speaking of that, I still have not looked for the rebate. Hopefully the deal is still alive.

I've been using these phones for almost 2 years now and I'm very happy with them. I've had to replace the cord: my 5 year old managed to wear it out. As far as comfort goes on these I'd give them about a 6/10. They aren't uncomfortable, but they sit on my head at sort of an odd angle and cause my glasses to rub a little bit.

The sound quality is phenomenal, and they have a very low resistance rating (don't need an amp; easy to drive with weaker signals like walkman or Ipod.)

For $38 they're a great deal.
