Coupon code: LSDA0921 (Should work until the 10th)

I jumped on this deal. Shipping was pretty quick, though they can be pretty bad about sending out confirmation emails and tracking numbers.

These headphones are great! There is a simple 5 minute mod you can do that turns these into the HD595s, and it's reversible!

There's also a "soundstage mod" that involves cutting out the inner grill/mesh. It's not reversible, but I think it makes them sound noticeably better.

Along with giving them a good bit of burn-in time, I would strongly recommend that you have a decent source for these. They sound terrible out of my iPod Touch 3G. They sound incredible out of my Xonar DX. So, if you don't have a decent source to go along with these, I wouldn't bother!

Great deal, but I already have a pair of hd280's. I know the 555's are open, but if it sounds much better I'll grab myself a pair.

Thoughts?

Just bought a pair. Thanks! I've never had a great pair of headphones, but have always wanted some. After reading about these this price seems unbelievable. Thanks for the post.

How bad is the outside noise on these? I'm seriously considering.

They're open headphones. You can hear pretty much everything around you, and people can hear your music. Of course, these two factors depend on how loud you have it.

I believe the majority of users would say the HD555s are definitely a step up in sound quality, though I have heard of a select few who prefer the HD280s. Given the open nature of the HD555s, they'll at least sound different. To me, I think an open sound is more natural. However, keep in mind that the HD555s require a decent source...the HD280s usually aren't as "picky".

Tremendous deal. Very rare to see Sennheiser stuff on such a drastic sale.

Anyone use these for use in public? I need something for walking between classes, sitting outside of class, traveling, etc.

I yielded to temptation and ordered a pair.

Can I drive these directly from my motherboard or will a need a separate amp?

Thanks!

Hmm...wondering if running them on my EVO would be satisfactory. lol.

I've had a pair of 555's for over 4 years now still working like a champ. As for using it with your phone, I don't have any idea as to what it puts out, but my 555's sound great coming out of my mp3 player so I think you'd be okay. Might look funny plugged in though, what with the big connector - little connector adapter.

I would recommend looking into a decent amp. As I said, they sound terrible out of my iPod Touch 3G. They were very thin and lifeless sounding. They got plenty loud...they just sounded bad. From my Xonar DX, though, they sound fantastic.

If you have a desktop, you could probably get a Xonar DS for these. I think they'd go very well together, and the DS is pretty cheap.

I'm still tempted, but my current PC is mini-itx and I can't add in a sound card. It's only got 1 pci-e x16 total.

I doubt I would use this with my ipod as it's open and it'd be awkward playing my music for others to listen heh.

It says impedance for the 280 is 64 ohms, whereas the 555 can either be 50 or 120 heh.

I jumped on these, even though I am using a pair right now. I just love these headphones so much that I want to grab a spare pair.

FWIW, I use them with onboard sound on my PC without any adapter and they sound great, but I'm not an audiophile so maybe I just don't know what I am missing by not using an amp... but in any case these sound better than any other pair of headphones I have used, and are incredibly comfortable.

You know, the 555s get very loud from my iPod Touch. They just sound bad.

I drive my 595s with an Omega Claro Halo...

I have no idea how the 555s compare though in terms of amp needs and whatnot.

The 555s are the exact same as the 595s. The only difference is a piece of foam Sennheiser has stuck on the inner grill. You can remove it, turning your 555s into 595s. It's completely reversible, easy to do, and takes very little time. Just be careful so that you don't break any internal wiring!

TO ANYONE WORRIED ABOUT THESE: If you don't like them, you can easily sell them for more than you paid.

Schweet. I've got a pair of HD570's that are coming up on 10 years old. They still sound great, but the wear and tear is starting to show. The foam covering over the drivers is starting to break down, and the velvet earpieces are getting kind of ratty. So I think investing in a couple of these 555's is a good idea, especially at this price. Thanks OP!
