A Cmoy based amp would be a great match for these cans.
You can find cmoy based amps on Ebay or if your crafty enough, there's plenty of instructions on building one.

That's a very nice price on a new set of great headphones. I use this as my primary set on my main rig and paid $135 for a used set about 6 months ago. These are absolutely worth the cash at this price. 95% of the performance of the 595s at 2/3 the price.

yes, you can plug them into your sound card, but an amp will bring the best out of these cans. more info here.

I don't have those "Golden Ears" some claim to have, but here's my 2 cents anyway:

An Audigy class card will drive the phones OK. They do sound nicer through an amp, but the difference is small.
A CMOY would do OK, they're fairly reasonable and easy to build yourself.

The SR60's are great as a counter-balance for the 580's. The SR-60's are very forward where the 580's are relaxed.
For Rock music, the 60's have some winning properties you may enjoy over the 580's. Slim but it's there.

As an overall headphone, the 580's are very, very hard to beat in the $125 range. If at all.
From my own experience, at $125 you will NOT find a more universal, good headset. And while near everybody
will say you must have an amp, in my own experience that is not true. You'll need to crank up the volume, bass and treble
but an Audigy is driving my 580's fine, and I have a nice headphone amp to compare it to.

Yeah, these are freaking great headphones for their price. If I didn't have HD555's already right now I'd be totally in. I'm currently saving up for K701's though.

darker and less forward (or recessed, gentle, but warmer) is the general consensus

we all hear things differently, and these phones are known to scale very well all the way up to $4000 monoblocks. I am a happy camper with PPX3 myself. If you wanna get by something cheaper, perhaps you could contact MisterX at head-fi, or check the FS forum for a used amp in $150~$300 range.

The HD580s are the same as the HD600s except for the grills so that the bass sounds different (or so I heard). So this is really a great deal, but an amp is almost a must considering the high impedance of these cans IMO. If you are not going to spend the money on an amp, you might as well stick with a lower end headphone.

You can replace the grills with the 600 grills and replace the cable with the 650 cable.

this is an awesome deal. i got my hd580 for ~$250 back in 2001.. used it with a Creek obh-11. it was my first decent set of cans and gave me yrs of enjoyment.. also might wanna look into upgrading the cable as well. makes quite a bit of difference.

The HD580 is excellent. I have this and the Grado SR80's and these two complement each other very nicely. The Grados are much more forward, like you are right in the middle of the music, whereas the Senn's put you back in the audience. The Senn's are also less efficient so an amp helps. My recommendation for an amp can be found here: http://www.electric-avenues.com/. The PA2V2 is an excellent value, plus Gary, the guy who makes each of them, has wonderful customer service. I've had more expensive headphones and amps and wound up selling them and just keeping the HD580's, SR80, and the PA2V2 amp. The current Amazon price on the HD580's is a good one, as has been pointed out above!

I just wish they'd make an open-air headset. My Steelsound 5Hv2 is good for 19.99....but I'd like an HD-series with a boom.

Ah, I need a new pair of headphones, and for Christmas, I was planning on the HD580. I did not know they were discontinued, and the current version is the HD595. Do I save $40, or should I jump for the HD595?

The HD580s look more confortable, but I hear they have some problem which many claim an amp (Id use them mostly with X-Fi Platinum soundcard) and new cables (Like the replacement HD650s) is best to get the best quality out of them. Im confused, I just want to replace my broken HD212 Pros...

If you're not planning getting an amp, but still want a high quality Sennheiser, consider getting a HD-555 or HD-595, they more suited for movies, gaming and casual music listening. The 580/600/650 is more for pro audio and audiophile use.
