Depends, do you already have or are willing to purchase a headphone amp?

I don't have one now, but would consider getting one.

Ah, well. You won't be dissapointed after break-in. They're a bit delicate (like senns aren't...). Love the A900s; great space for a closed can.

One funny thing is that they're huge!

Good choice.

Huge, but *comfortable!*

They're a major step up from my Sony V600s.

Wait until you do the blu-tak mod. Tightens the bass, cleans up the highs and gets the mids out of the shadows. It might take a few tries but once you find the right balance you'll love it. It really gives it amazing detail, soundstage, and clarity. They are incredibly comfortable, although I wish they had velour ear pads myself. I lucked out and got mine slightly used (in mint physical condition, really just saved me the time of breaking them in) for about $125 plus the like $3 for stuff needed for the mod, but in my opinion $200 is a bargain.

I got the DT 990 almost 10 years ago for not much more than what this deal is and they're still listed on the web site:

http://www.beyerdynamic.com/cms/Headphones.68.0.html?&L=1

I think the DT990s you have are not really the same ones they make today. Also that link is to the PRO versions which I believe actually aren't even as good.

Grado seems to be the rock headphones these days. There seem to be several brands that are good for classical (some Beyers, some AudioTechnica, and some Sennheiser among many other brands).

He speaks the truth. IIRC, the old 990's had a huge impedance.

senn hd 280 pro

or

senn hd 580

I am not going to use an amp. And will be using these for movies, games (mostly) and music (rock, pop, rap).

Which will be better for my situation?

And when people say they are open and everyone can hear, at what volume does this apply. Like if the volume is low can everyone still hear what i am playing. And on the flip side, can I play these at low volumes in a lan party or in my room, without being disturbed by minor outside noice (such as computer fan or door opening)

This is off the topic, but whenever I wear my HD280 Pros at a Lan Party, I can't hear WTF my team is saying, so we have to use Ventrilo or in-game voice, or I have to take one ear off... I don't recommend it for lan parties. It blocks out EVERYTHING.

I keep hearing that closed headphones like my hd 280 have sucky spatialization. However, when i used my hd 280s with the x-fi's surround sound headphone virtualization, the headphones have better sound placement than my 7.1 Creative T7700s. Would it be worth the upgrade to a 580 in my case (I don't have an amp)?

The HD580's will beat the pants off the 280's in sound quality.
I have driven 580's without amp and they still sound good, just not their greatest.
Also you'll have to crank up the volume quite considerably on the sound card.
If you don't want to at least get a CMOY or somesuch, maybe the 280's will be better for you.

If the volume is low, people can't really hear, especially not in any kind of noisy environment. I crank my 580's quite a bit, and yes they leak more than closed sets, but I don't think it's at all terrible. If you're concerned about LAN parties, don't worry. It's not like you're hanging loudspeakers from your head.

Overall, if the purchase of a cheap headphone amp puts you off, either borrow a HD580 set or buy it where you can return without hassle, then try without amp.

Advice on the new cord - the leads aren't color-coded (black/black instead of red/black), but the "R" in Sennheiser on the top of the band is on the right side. Also, plug the cord leads in with the letter pointing outwards, not inwards.

I was aware of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 problem and still bought them having directly compared Sennheiser models to Beyerdynamic. So this is fixed with the new versions then?

Either way, I'd sure like to find out if Beyerdynamic is still the way to go for rock'n'roll (as opposed to classical music). It's tough to find places where you can compare them directly but that's the only way to tell if Beyerdynamic is still better.

These sennheiser 580's are sweet. For the money, the headphones are insane. No way can you do better.

I got these headphones at a similar price on newegg a LONG time ago (I think it was a pricing error but it could have just been a sale). Nice deal. I'd definitely go for it if I didn't have them.

I've had both (HD-280 Pros for maybe 2 years and the HD-580's for about 4) and I like the HD-580's a LOT better. A decent amp helps but I think out of the box I'd still prefer the HD-580's. They're also MUCH more comfortable. Velour > Pleather

They're "open" but it's not too bad. I think if you were listening to music at normal levels, someone a few feet away wouldn't be able to hear it or would barely be able to hear it. I think you'll be fine at LAN parties.

They are open in the sense that if you're not listening to anything, it's basically like you're not wearing them. You hear things pretty much like you would if you weren't wearing them. That said, I've never known that to be a distraction.

For comparison, Grado's are wide open. In the same situation, someone would be able to hear the Grado's pretty well from a few feet away.

the sennheiser 580's are a top notch set. Get them. i have been with this company for a very long time and bought many models and love each one. I currently own the 650's and nothing beats them. The 580's and 590's are awesome. In fact i started my sennhesier collection exactly with these 500 series models and used them for some years and have been happy. And i still use them at my parents home.

Would purchase them again if i had too.

Amps help but that shouldnt deter people from buying them.

Buy them and enjoy.

Are you using them mostly on your computer? If so just get a good soundcard, it will have both a ok DAC and a ok amp. Its great bang for the buck.

yea, using them on my computer. i have x-fi platinum already, but thinking about upgrading to the elite version because the elite has a better DAC.
