Are those the headphones or the new IEMs? If its the former then these will sound much better. If its the latter then they should still sound better but they're pretty different so you can't necessarily compare the two.

There is a very small minority at head-fi that actually think triports are ok to decent. That, of course, negleting its price tag and price/performance ratio. Most wouldnt really take the triports as a serious contender, regardless of how much it costs.

HD 280s are cheap and have great isolation or so im told.

My brother has HD280s, they do isolate really well and they are relatively cheap. They're very uncomfortable imo though and I still prefer open back headphones.

After 4 years mine are starting to loosen up

I'm happy for the $60 I spent and I generally only use headphones when I need to be quiet and not disturb anyone, so that's why I'm hesitant to get an open pair like these.

Oh, and the 280s also serve as my hearing protection when I'm cutting metal with my dremmel, they work great

That's a good price for the DT-880's. For those who are interested, though, be forewarned that these definitely need an amp - they use more power than the Senn's do. As far as being neutral - I guess you could say that. They don't seem to have any sort of sound character of their own so it is hard to describe except to say they are netural. With choral arrangements and classical music I really liked them, but not so much for rock, pop or jazz.

Yes, well the price was similar so I thought they would be similar.

I just got a pair myself (see my post on previous page ) and I love them. I can see how they will take a little time to really break-in, but even out of the box, I think they are very comfortable. Great sound isolation.

Anything with a Bose sticker is automatically overpriced. By at least 500%.

Just a couple tips for prospective buyers:

I once purchased the HD580s and must have got a bad unit (returned it) as there was a substantial difference between the sound levels of the two drivers. My point is that the 580s don't have matched drivers so the sound may differ slightly between the two drivers though it's probably not usually noticeable. If you wan't matched drivers and a stiffer frame with an overall better sound, save up for the HD600s. I read that the 600 is built to a 1dB tolerance as opposed to the 580's 3dB. About 3 dB is about double the perceived loudness when measuring sound levels but this may not be a good analogy. The 600s are built with a stiffer carbon fiber frame than the plastic cased 580s that is said to improve the sound. They sound better to me than the 580s and I like the build quality better.

I waited for years and finally got the 600s and added an HD650 cord. It's been just what I was looking for and I don't even use an amp. My thinking was that since I planned to use them daily for decades, why not save up the $250 or so for the 600s. Amazingly, I haven't become a "can collector" as some audiophiles warn you will become mostly 'cause I'm a frugal type person. The 600s have done well with every kind of music I've tried from rock to classical and new age with plenty of bass. I bet the 580s would be a good compromise though for half the price. I'd recommend the 600's if you can wait and save about $125 more. Keep in mind you also are advised to replace the ear cushions every few years depending on usage rate for hygienic reasons and wear. The improved replacement HD650 cord is only about $11.00 from SennheiserUSA with very reasonable shipping and a good improvement for both the 580s and 600s.

HD650 Cord Linked Note it only has a 1/4" plug so you may need an adapter (Part # 92595 Nice 1/4" to 1/8" adapter at same store but not linkable, sorry)

To get the 600s for $250 shipped may be difficult as JR.com no longer seems to have them! What's up with that? They say the 650s are replacing the 600s which is a thoroughly bad idea as most audio enthusiasts will concur. The 650s aren't as natural sounding and very different headphones with a forced bass heavy sound, and the consumer wants choices.. Wow, Sennheiser if you read this please don't cancel the HD600s! First the superb Sony MDR-V6 disappears for the less than stellar V600s and now this.. I just can't believe it. Please someone tell me it's not happening. If it is, I'd advise saving the $270 or so to get the HD600s from Amazon or somewhere before they disappear if they are indeed going away. Extremely bad idea Sennheiser! :Q

wow. DT-880s is a much better deal. good suggestion.

I miss mine; wish I hadn't sold em.

880 are a better all round can for those who listen to more agressive music. 580's are too laid back for my taste.

To those of you upgrading the cable to the HD650's, keep in mind it's terminated with a 1/4" plug, not the 3/8" with a 1/4" adapter.

You'll need one of these:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062467
or
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102666

Just make sure you're getting Stereo-to-Stereo, not Mono-to-Stereo or Stereo-to-Mono. They've got several different ones that will accomodate the plug, just make sure to get S-to-S. "Gold plated" one is 50 cents more. This adapter might make the plug not too soundcard friendly as well.

Also - Sennheiser has been "about to cancel" the HD580s since I bought my pair in 2000. Somehow they're still very widely available. Funny that.

I think the only thing they actually cancelled was the "DSP Pro" Pro-Logic sound processor which wasn't that great at its job.

I might have jumped on these if I didn't get a pair of Audio-Technica A900s for X-mas.

Ah, well. You won't be dissapointed after break-in. They're a bit delicate (like senns aren't...). Love the A900s; great space for a closed can.

One funny thing is that they're huge!

Good choice.

A guy over at HeadFi got an email back from Senn saying they are now discontinued.

Huge, but *comfortable!*

They're a major step up from my Sony V600s.

I've owned the Senn 600s for a couple of years (thanks to an old hot deal here). What are the advantages to using 650 cables with them? I've been staying away from headfi.com in order to save $.

I have the Sony MDR-V6 headphones... should I stay with these or consider the Senn 580 or the Beyerdynamic DT880 ?

Depends, do you already have or are willing to purchase a headphone amp?

How is plugging the 580's in to a typical low-end Sony HT receiver as a test? Is the amplifier still an issue? Is a burnin period needed badly?

I got these from this post - they shipped very fast - not because I need them but because I sort of always wanted them if they'd have some wonderful detailed sound, but doing the test above, they sound good, but even not so good speakers (one has a shredded woofer) still sound preferable to me.

(I also plugged them into a Soundblaster ZS 2 Platinum, and they'd be great if I didn't already have Klipsch Ultra 5.1's, but I do, so again... though I have to admit the headphones sometimes have better surround effects than the speakers which really are located physically surrounding, somehow. I'm not sure how they do it.)
