these are *hands down* the best headphones i've ever owned. they are noticeably better than my HD580s (and just as comfy!) and are worth the money for anyone with a discerning ear. that said, i highly recommend a headphone amp to accompany them.

I know it's unfair to compare earbuds to these, but can anyone compare these to the Shure line of earbuds? I'm trying to decide what to get....

These earphones are spectacular!

Comparing Shure earbuds to them is like comparing a Toyota to a Farrari. They do however really want and deserve a good headphone amp.

An amplifier for headphones to really bring out the abilities of a good heaphone like the 650. There are tons of different designs, I know MisterX on the does custom builds.

I only have/heard E2C, so I cant really comment much on the "Shure house sound".

For one thing though, I think they are both very forgiving and euphonic, somewhat bass heavy with midbass bloat. Also there is some rolloff on the high extreme, which may account for easy listening to a certain degree. Some call it 'veiled', though I dig it a lot personally. There are people who swear by CD3000s, and my PPX3 is supposed to be a very good match for them. Yet I found them unbearable without heavy eqing, different strokes for different folks. My next experiment in the search for the ideal headphone (within the afforadable price range, that is) will be the highly praised AKG K701, 3 weeks and still patiently waiting

I would say VanillaH's assessment of the Shures is very accurate.

Many will like their bass heavy voicing, personally I find them to be lacking in detail and openess compared to the Etymotics that I use with my Ipod.

I have the Senn 650's for use at home with a Headroom amp.
